STAX Reveals Upgraded SR-007S Electrostatic Headphones

Merging its iconic form with fresh acoustic innovation, the SR-007S ushers in a new era for STAX’s electrostatic excellence.

STAX has announced the release of the all-new SR-007S electrostatic earspeaker, reimagining one of its most iconic headphone designs. Available to order from June 30th, 2025, the SR-007S builds on a design lineage that began in 1998 and continues to evolve with modern refinements in both structure and sound.

Originally introduced as the SR-007 and later updated in the SR-007A, this third-generation model retains the signature circular driver housing and open-back configuration but incorporates significant upgrades, many of which draw inspiration from STAX’s current flagship, the SR-X9000.

Revised internal components, including a newly developed diaphragm and fixed electrode structure, are at the heart of the SR-007s. STAX engineers have reduced the diameter of the air vent holes by 20% compared to previous models using a high-precision etching process. This change optimises airflow and enhances acoustic response, resulting in greater clarity and resolution without sacrificing the signature warmth and depth defined by the 007 series.

The frame itself benefits from what STAX calls an Anti-Resonance Structure (ARS)—a design innovation lifted from the SR-X9000. It incorporates a stainless-steel arc to improve rigidity and reduce unwanted vibrations. This, paired with a newly designed hinge mechanism, improves comfort and adjustability without manual calibration. A rubberised head pad mount ensures a snug, balanced fit across a wide range of head shapes, continuing the STAX approach of fuss-free ergonomics.

Attention has also been paid to the earpads, which now feature a rotating mechanism for better adaptability and comfort. Crafted from high-grade sheepskin, the material was chosen not only for its tactile softness but also for its sonic properties. The leather helps reduce internal reflections and improves acoustic absorption, while the redesigned inner pad contributes to a more spacious and precise soundstage. Finished in STAX’s signature brown, the new pads reinforce the product’s blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary audio engineering.

In a move many users will welcome, STAX has introduced a detachable cable system for the SR-007S. This addition supports long-term maintenance and part replacement and opens the door for potential cable upgrades down the line. The stock cable is a 2.5-metre, parallel six-strand low-capacitance design that preserves channel balance and signal integrity.

Specifications include a frequency response of 6Hz to 41kHz, an impedance of 145 KΩ, and a sensitivity rating of 101 dB. The earphones operate with a 580V DC bias voltage and weigh 430 grams (excluding the cable). The earpads use a mix of real lambskin leather where the ears make contact and high-quality leather elsewhere for durability and comfort.

The STAX SR-007S will be available for order from June 30th, 2025, at a retail price of US$2,200. For Australian consumers, units are expected to start shipping in early July with a recommended retail price of A$4,400. Pricing and availability for other regions are expected to be confirmed soon.
