Simple Upgrade Increases Sennheiser Headphone Compatibility

Sennheiser’s affordable wired headphones and earphones now sport USB-C.

Two models of Sennheiser’s budget wired headphones now support USB-C connectivity and are dubbed the HD 400U over-ears and the CX 80U in-ears.

This 2026 update, adding a USB-C connector, means the new models will plug into smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices without needing an adapter.

The previous HD 400S and CX 80S carried the classic 3.5mm headphone jacks. Unfortunately, since around 2016, the 3.5mm port has been culled by most smartphone and tablet makers, citing larger batteries, improved haptics, and better waterproofing.

Moreover, the new HD 400U and CX 80U support up to 24-bit/96kHz hi-res lossless audio via a 1.4m/1.2m USB-C wired connection, respectively. In comparison, Sennheiser's wireless, and much more spendy HDB 630 headphones require a dongle to support that resolution over Bluetooth.

Sennheiser says the HD 400U builds on its predecessor's "bass-driven acoustics" and "backpack-friendly portability" - it folds up so you can shove the cans in a decent-sized pocket or an average-sized bag. Their closed-back design offers isolation and focus across its claimed 18–20,000 Hz (-10 dB) frequency response; however, there’s no active noise cancellation to be had here, though. You do get a storage pouch and detachable cable to keep them safe when stowed.

The CX 80U in-ear wired headphones, meanwhile, offer a "balanced-yet-punchy sound" across its 17 – 20,000 Hz (-10 dB) stated frequency response and come with three eartip sizes for the Goldilocks fit test.

Both models feature an in-line remote that offers call and music management.

The Sennheiser HD 400U over-ears cost £70 | US$100 and the CX 80U in-ears cost £35 | US$40. Both are available now in black.
