Priced under US$1,000 (€999), it becomes the most accessible networked player in Shanling’s current desktop lineup and the first in the range to include HDMI ARC, positioning it as a bridge between two-channel hi-fi and home entertainment systems.

The SM90 sits below the SM1.3, which carries a higher-spec DAC platform, a dedicated headphone stage and a more elaborate power supply. The SM90 omits the headphone output and I2S connectivity, focusing instead on core streaming and system integration, housed in a 280 × 230 × 85 mm chassis weighing 3.3 kg.

The addition of HDMI ARC is a key inclusion. With a single cable, the SM90 can receive audio from a connected television and route it through a stereo system, removing the need for a separate AV receiver or soundbar. Shanling is not alone in offering this functionality. Eversolo’s DMP-A8 also includes HDMI ARC, though at a higher price point.

Under the hood, the SM90 uses dual AKM AK4493S DAC chips paired with an OPA1612 output stage. The platform runs on a Rockchip CPU, supported by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. A 4.96-inch 1080p touchscreen provides local control.

The new streaming DAC, powered by Android 12, features an optimised user interface specifically designed for audio streaming. You can access Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more directly from the 4.96-inch touchscreen. There’s also support for TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2, and DLNA.

Physical connections include HDMI ARC, coaxial and optical inputs and outputs, USB DAC functionality, and both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs. The unit also supports internal M.2 storage and external USB drives upto 2TB for local playback.

A linear power supply with a 35W toroidal transformer boosts the SM90’s performance. This component delivers clean, stable power and helps create a more analogue-style sound, says the brand.

Connectivity is a key part of the SM90’s attraction. It supports both wired Gigabit LAN and wireless dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for fast, reliable streaming. Bluetooth 5.2 also adds support for LDAC, AAC, and SBC for flexible playback.

On the Shanling website, Roon Ready certification is listed as pending, with the company confirming it is currently undergoing certification.

The Shanling SM90 will be available from May for £999 | US$969 | €999.
