Shanling EC Zero AKM Simplifies the Formula for Portable CD Lovers

Shanling is back spinning silver discs once again with the launch of the EC Zero AKM, a new addition to its growing line of portable CD players that proves the humble compact disc still has a place in modern hi-fi.

The release follows the EC Zero T, the hybrid tube and R-2R DAC model we reported on in May in Portable CD Revival as Shanling EC Zero T Packs R-2R and Tubes. That player reignited interest in high-end portable CD design by blending audiophile components with the practicality of a pocket-sized design.

Where the EC Zero T chased ultimate refinement with tubes and a discrete resistor DAC, the new EC Zero AKM takes a more accessible route. It keeps the same body, interface, and transport mechanism but swaps in an AKM AK4493S DAC and dual SGM8262-2 amplifiers, offering a more straightforward solid-state circuit and longer battery life — up to ten hours of continuous playback. Output power remains comparable, and Shanling has lowered output impedance for better pairing with sensitive in-ears.

In short, the EC Zero AKM delivers the same CD stability, Bluetooth connectivity, and portable convenience as its pricier sibling, but in a simpler, more efficient form. It retains the same inputs and outputs, including 3.5 mm and balanced 4.4 mm headphone jacks (the former doubling as a coax/optical SPDIF output), Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX Adaptive support, USB audio, and CD-ripping capability.

Physically, it’s unmistakably Shanling. The EC Zero AKM shares the same compact metal and tempered-glass chassis as the EC Zero T, weighing just 575 grams, and uses the company’s magnetic disc mechanism for stable playback even in motion. The design feels premium yet purposeful — a reminder that music ownership can still look and feel beautiful in an era of algorithmic playlists.

With streaming still dominant, Shanling’s insistence on perfecting the portable CD player could seem anachronistic — but that’s exactly the point. The EC Zero AKM makes physical playback feel purposeful again: tactile, durable, and self-contained, for listeners who still value owning their music as much as hearing it properly.

The Shanling EC Zero AKM is now available, with a suggested retail price of US$319. Pricing for other regions is yet to be confirmed.
