Piega Premium 301 Gen2 and Piega Premium 701 Gen2

Piega's Premium Gen2 passive range comprises the Premium 301 Gen2 bookshelf loudspeaker and the floor-standing Premium 701 Gen2. The new Swiss-made speakers boast a "luxurious design" and newly developed ribbon tweeters paired with new bass and midrange woofers.

Renowned designer Stefan Hürlemann is responsible for the Premium Gen2 speaker's clean industrial look. The cabinets are made from seamless aluminium profiles and feature an inner wood matrix that enhances the acoustic performance.

The removable front grille is gently curved to harmonise with the casing, while unnecessary edges and joins have been eliminated. The anodised aluminium versions of the Premium Gen2 series have a sandblasted matte finish, lending them an even more harmonious appearance than their brushed predecessors.

Both new models benefit from the newly developed RM 01-24 series ribbon tweeters - the "RM" moniker honouring the tweeter's inventors, Roger Kessler and Mario Ballabio.

These handcrafted super-symmetrical dynamic drivers (SSD) were inspired in their design by the successful Coax Series tweeters, as we experienced in our Coax 411 Gen2 review. We're told that thanks to dual magnetics in front and behind the foil diaphragm, the new tweeters "are significantly more dynamic" than previous Premium speakers with their rear-driven foil.

Also derived from its elevated stablemates in the Coax series, the company's exclusive damping material inside the Premium Gen2 cabinets helps achieve a "sound quality previously thought impossible with conventional aluminium enclosures" according to the Swiss company.

Compared to its predecessor, the casing is slimmer and more visually harmonious, with fewer edges and seams for a less obtrusive appearance that blends better with living environments. The newly developed woofer and specialised bass reflex tuning provide deep bass that will delight music lovers, without any acoustic compromises.

The bookshelf Premium 301 Gen2 measures 310x170x228mm [HxWxD] and is said to be capable of a 39–50,000 Hz (± 2dB) frequency range from its two-way design featuring a 140mm FSD-M Woofer paired with an RM 01-24 Tweeter. Sensitivity is listed as 89dB alongside a 4Ω impedance.

Impedance is the same for the 1115x170x228mm [HxWxD] 701 Gen2 3-way floorstanders. This wrings out a claimed 34–50,000 Hz from its twin 140mm FSD-Woofers, 140mm FSD-M Woofer and RM 01-24 Tweeter in this 90dB sensitive set-up.

For better integration into living spaces, the Premium 701 Gen2 stands on a round base that is visually separated from the casing, creating the impression that the speaker is floating.
