The MD3 first surfaced in January at CanJam Dubai 2026, where StereoNET reported on Fosi Audio’s new portable DAC lineup. It now returns as a finished commercial product, with Fosi confirming a 25 May launch.
Rather than following the usual dangling dongle-DAC approach, the MD3 uses a MagSafe-style magnetic backplate with sixteen N52 magnets, allowing it to sit against compatible smartphones more like a small audio module than an inline accessory. Fosi says an aluminium alloy isolation plate separates the magnets from the internal PCB to reduce the risk of magnetic interference affecting the audio circuitry.

Fosi has built the MD3 around ESS silicon, using the Sabre ES9039Q2M DAC chip alongside four ES9603Q amplifier chips in a balanced output stage. The unit supports USB Audio Class 2.0 playback at up to PCM 32-bit/384kHz and native DSD256, while UAC 1.0 compatibility is limited to PCM 16-bit/48kHz for broader device support.
Headphone connectivity options include 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs. The published specifications quote output power of at least 80mW x2 into 32 ohms from the 3.5mm output, rising to at least 180mW x2 into 32 ohms via the 4.4mm balanced connection. Fosi also lists a supported headphone impedance range of 16 to 300 ohms, suggesting the MD3 is aimed less at difficult full-size planar headphones and more at IEMs, portable headphones and easier-to-drive over-ear designs.

A quick dive into the performance potential gives us a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 115dB from the 3.5mm output and 116dB from the balanced output, with the noise floor listed below 1.7μV single-ended and 2.7μV balanced. In practical terms, that should help keep background hiss low when using sensitive in-ear monitors, where lesser portable DAC/amps can sometimes make themselves heard before the music even starts.
Fosi is also claiming THD+N figures of 0.00075% from the 3.5mm output and 0.00084% from the 4.4mm balanced output, which are competitive numbers for a compact portable DAC/amp. Taken alongside the quoted 115–116dB signal-to-noise ratio, it suggests Fosi is chasing genuinely clean output rather than relying solely on the MD3’s magnetic design and circular display as headline features.

As always, real-world performance will depend on the partnering phone, headphones and listening environment, but the figures put the MD3 firmly in the modern portable hi-res DAC category.
The MD3’s design suggests Fosi is deliberately trying to make the device feel less like a utility dongle and more like something users might actually enjoy handling. Its circular 1.28-inch LCD display goes beyond basic volume or sample-rate information, with support for playback details, animated images and user-uploaded photos, while a dedicated Vista Button provides access to the onboard image album. It is an unusually playful touch for a portable DAC, though whether that feels useful or simply novel will likely depend on how much users value the MD3’s visual presence on the back of a phone.
In a statement published on its official product page, Fosi explained:
Traditional dongle DAC/amps often feel awkward to use — hanging from the phone, pulling on cables, and falling short on true portability. We wanted to break away from this pattern.
Other practical features include dual USB-C ports for audio decoding, image transfer, firmware upgrades and charging duties, allowing users to listen while supplying external power. The MD3 also includes 100-step digital volume control, volume memory, physical controls and a CNC-machined aluminium alloy chassis. It measures 70 x 45 x 12mm and weighs 50g without cable.

The Fosi Audio MD3 MagDAC has expected pricing of US$149.99.
