Focal took the name for its Bathys headphones from a deep-sea exploration submersible, the Bathyscaphe. However, Focal hopes its upgraded Bathys MG will raise the performance of these Bluetooth 5.2 ANC headphones to new heights.

Touted as a "significant evolution" of the company's premium wireless headphones, offering a "premium experience of refined sound and advanced noise cancellation alongside a comfortable fit for long listening sessions."
Top of the upgrade list is that the high-end Bathys MG features a pure magnesium (Mg) driver membrane to partner the signature M-shaped dome instead of the aluminium/magnesium mix of the originals. According to Focal, this lighter option brings greater precision and increased separation between your music's many layers.

Next are the new digital microphones, which assist Focal's goal of improved noise cancellation. The Bathys MG offers three noise-cancelling modes—silent, Soft, and Transparent—the same as the original Bathys over-ears.
Additionally, the Bathys MG USB-DAC offers 24-bit/192kHz hi-res support when wired to a compatible source via the 1.2m USB-C cable, which is provided alongside a 1.2m jack lead.

Focal says we should expect greater comfort thanks to the new MG cans' use of premium materials, including new foam in the headband, ergonomic ear cushions, and lightweight aluminium and magnesium in the yoke.

Battery life remains at 30 hours when listening wirelessly. Plug them in via the 1.2m jack, and you'll enjoy 35 hours of noise-cancelled playback and 42 hours when utilising the headphones' USB-C connection. If you get caught short, the fast-charging facility translates five hours of playtime from a 15-minute boost.

The Bathys MG sports a tasteful Chestnut finish, the same colourway graced by the brand's Applause Award-winning Focal Clear Mg over-ears.
The Focal Bathys MG will be available starting in April, priced at £999/ $1,299 /AU$2,300, which is a bit of a bump over the standard model's ticket price.
