beyerdynamic expands its professional lineup with the new DT 990 PRO X, a modernised evolution of its beloved open-back studio headphones. Building on a reputation dating back to the 1980s, the new model introduces a detachable cable, upgraded driver technology, and broader device compatibility, signalling a meaningful update for a headphone long considered a studio workhorse.

Officially launched in Heilbronn, Germany, today (5th of June 2025), the DT 990 PRO X responds to today’s hybrid studio culture, where creators move between audio interfaces, laptops, and portable devices. The new model’s 48-ohm impedance makes it easier to drive across a range of playback gear while retaining the wide, detailed soundstage that made the original DT 990 PRO a go-to for critical listening.

Kevin Nietsch, Product Manager at beyerdynamic told StereoNET:

With the DT 990 PRO X, we wanted to create a tool that modern studio professionals didn’t already have. These headphones are engineered to magnify subtle mix imperfections that might otherwise go unnoticed—a true companion for studio monitors.

Among the most significant updates is the inclusion of beyerdynamic’s STELLAR.45 driver system, which offers an extended frequency range of 5Hz to 40kHz and promises exceptional clarity, low distortion, and precise transient response. The headphones also incorporate a newly detachable 3m mini-XLR to 3.5mm cable with a 6.3mm screw-on adapter, adding practical flexibility for studio and mobile use alike.

True to the company’s reputation for durability and craftsmanship, the DT 990 PRO X features replaceable components, velour earpads, and an ergonomically padded headband designed for long sessions without fatigue. Despite its open-back design, the headphone is robust enough for daily professional use and remains manufactured in Germany—an assurance of both build quality and sonic precision.

The DT 990 PRO X is joined by its closed-back sibling, the DT 770 PRO X, as part of a broader refresh aimed at today’s fast-evolving production landscape. While the original DT 990 PRO has seen use in studios from Berlin to Los Angeles, its latest iteration is designed for a new generation of engineers, musicians, and bedroom producers who demand both fidelity and flexibility.

The beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X is available now for US$199 / €199,00 / A$399 through authorised retailers. Regional pricing and distribution are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
