The software reflects the reality that many creators now work from bedrooms, apartments or mobile setups rather than traditional studios. While monitors and acoustic treatment remain the reference standard, they are often impractical due to space, cost or noise constraints. HEADPHONE LAB is intended to extend beyerdynamic’s professional studio headphones into a calibrated, software-assisted monitoring environment.

The plug-in combines headphone calibration with virtual studio monitoring. Compatible beyerdynamic studio headphones are aligned to a reference studio sound profile developed through long-term research and collaboration with professional recording facilities, before spatial processing is applied to reduce the familiar “in-head” presentation of headphones in favour of a more speaker-like soundstage.

Two calibration modes are available. Standard Calibration aligns each supported model to a reference “golden sample” defined by beyerdynamic’s acoustic engineers. For higher precision, Factory Calibration uses individual production measurement data to compensate for material and manufacturing variations. This approach, currently supported on selected models including the DT 700 PRO X, DT 900 PRO X, DT 1770 PRO MK II and DT 1990 PRO MK II, points to a closer integration between hardware manufacturing and software correction than is typical in headphone-based monitoring tools.

Beyond tonal balance, HEADPHONE LAB also addresses spatial perception, a persistent challenge when mixing on headphones. Because headphones deliver isolated signals to each ear, stereo imaging and depth cues differ significantly from speaker playback. The plug-in simulates a high-quality speaker setup to provide stable imaging and reliable spatial cues without introducing phase artefacts or exaggerated effects.

Users can further tailor the experience by entering head circumference and ear spacing to refine timing cues, adjusting virtual speaker angles to 40°, 60°, or 80°, and enabling optional room simulation to maintain a consistent reference when working in unfamiliar spaces.

Martin Stahl, Director of PRO Audio at beyerdynamic commment on the release:

With HEADPHONE LAB, we are expanding this foundation with versatile software. The plug-in enables reliable mixing decisions even in situations where classic studio environments are not feasible.

HEADPHONE LAB is available as a free download for Windows and macOS, supporting VST3, AU and AAX plug-in formats. It is compatible with all current beyerdynamic studio headphones, although Factory Calibration is limited to selected models.

While software-based monitoring is not new, beyerdynamic’s tightly linked hardware-and-software approach suggests a future in which headphone-first mixing is less of a compromise and more a deliberate, practical production choice.
