Audio Research Reference 330M Monoblock Amplifiers Officially Released

After originally debuting at High-End Munich 2024, the Audio Research Reference 330M Monoblock Amplifier is now officially available.

Audio Research describes this flagship tube amplifier as 'a fusion of traditional valve amplification and modern refinements to deliver exceptional sonic performance.'
According to Audio Research, the Reference 330M significantly advances its celebrated Reference amplifier lineage. Originally intended as a more powerful version of the Reference 160M, this model has evolved into a sophisticated blend of features from various previous Reference amplifiers, ultimately providing 330 watts per channel.

The company states that the 330M marks a notable progression from the initial concept introduced in 2022. At its core, the Reference 330M features a fully tube-based signal path, incorporating six KT170 output tubes to enhance musicality and power handling. Audio Research asserts that these high-performance tubes offer an increased plate voltage margin, peak cathode current, and plate dissipation, contributing to a dynamic and refined sonic signature.
A robust power supply architecture underpins the Reference 330M, combining solid-state regulation for the front end with tube regulation (6H30 and 6550) for the driver stage and output tube shields. A Pi filter and large choke reduce unwanted ripple in the output stage’s power supply, further refining performance. The amplifier operates exclusively in Pentode mode—a configuration that allows the output tubes to deliver maximum power and efficiency by keeping their screen grid at a high voltage, promising a dynamic, full-bodied sound with strong drive and presence. It is balanced throughout its signal path, which should ensure a low-noise, high-fidelity output. The rear panel has balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs, dedicated speaker connections for 8-ohm and 4-ohm loads, RS-232 control, 12V trigger inputs, and a tube hour meter. A 20A IEC mains connection and an adjustable fan speed feature are practical enhancements.

The Reference 330M is designed for user convenience and long-term reliability. It incorporates Audio Research’s advanced auto-bias and valve monitoring systems, effectively enhancing the tubes' lifespan and minimising maintenance requirements. This thoughtful engineering allows you to enjoy your audio system with greater peace of mind and less downtime. The GhostMeter VU display highlights the design, a visually striking feature that creates the illusion of a floating meter in front of the KT170 tubes through a dual-layer glass panel.

The Audio Research Reference 330M Monoblock Amplifier is now available to order in either black or silver finishes. As a high-end offering, pricing is listed as ‘price on application’ (POA) in the UK, reflecting fluctuations in exchange rates and import costs. However, we understand the price to be £92,000 / US$90,000 range per stereo pair (including VAT).
