Oppo Announces New Blu-Ray Player

After an award-winning streak of nearly two years by the acclaimed BDP-93 Blu-ray player, Oppo follows up with the BDP-103AU. Due in November, the BDP-103AU is a premium universal Blu-ray Disc™ player that supports Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), HDCD, and CD formats.

Additionally, the player features three USB ports as well as wired and wireless networking to support popular video and audio file formats including AVCHD, MKV video, high-resolution WAV and FLAC music, and digital photos. The player provides access to popular entertainment network services including Netflix®, VUDU®, Film Fresh®, Pandora® and YouTube®, with more to come (some services available in USA only).

OPPO products are known for their excellent picture quality, and the BDP-103AU  continues in this tradition. Using a two-step video processing approach that utilizes a custom dual-core SoC and the latest generation of Marvell’s Qdeo® video processor, the player delivers a stunning theatrical experience with true-to-life picture. Additional video processing features include 4K up-scaling, 2D-to-3D conversion, 1080p24Hz output, HDMI 1.4 with Deep Color, Source Direct output, and extensive picture control and enhancement options. Two HDMI outputs are provided, adding to the players’ versatility by allowing one output to be used for video and the other for audio, and even enabling the player to drive two displays at the same time.

On the audio side, the player supports all of the high-resolution audio formats with bit-stream output and onboard decoding of Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD® Master Audio™. For SACD playback, users can choose between sending native DSD or converted PCM through the HDMI and analogue outputs depending on their preference and equipment compatibility. The BDP-103AU provides a configurable 7.1ch analogue output that can be used in stereo, 5.1ch or 7.1ch mode.

Last but not least, customers have always asked for ways to take further advantage of the excellent audio and video processing functions provided by the OPPO players, and the new player answers this request by adding two HDMI input ports, one on the front and one on the back, with the front HDMI input doubling as a Mobile High-definition Link (MHL®) input. Users can connect external devices such as set-top boxes, network streaming devices, and even mobile phones to take advantage of the players’ video processing power.

The BDP-103AU is designed for user convenience and installation flexibility. Beyond the included back-lit remote control, the player can be controlled via its IR IN, RS-232 control ports, and mobile phone control apps. Users will appreciate the quick start-up and fast disc loading performance of this player. By connecting to Gracenote's global media database over the Internet, the BDP-103AU can offer an enriched playback experience by displaying Cover Art, Title, Artist, Genre and other media information for CD, DVD, Blu-ray and a wide range of digital media files. Accented with a heavy gauge brushed aluminium front panel, dimmable display and a sturdy chassis, the player fits well with any home theatre environment or sound system.

The suggested retail price for Australia will be $699, with launch due in November.  The BDP-103AU will be available through authorised OPPO dealers nationally.

The multi award-winning BDP-95AU is still available, and remains excellent value at its RRP of $1299.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
