DALI Oberon Grand Vokal, Phantom CI AMP-2500 & SUB S-100 Announced

DALI's home cinema range gets a boost with the introduction of the Oberon Grand Vokal full-range centre channel speaker released alongside the CI AMP-2500 amplifier and SUB S-100 subwoofer from the Phantom series.

The DALI Phantom SUB S-100 subwoofer is a 10-inch low-profile in-wall speaker promising audiophile performance. The SUB S-100 subwoofer has been developed alongside and, according to DALI, to be amplified by the Phantom CI AMP-2500 DSP amplifier for the best results. Of course, the amp is compatible with other speakers.

The rack-mountable 2x500 watts Class-D Phantom CI AMP-2500 DSP amplifier boasts extremely high efficiency and ultra-low distortion and can be bridged into a 1,000 watt mono amp. This, says DALI, makes it the perfect power source for the Phantom S and M series products and up to four Phantom SUB S-100 in-wall subwoofers.

Meanwhile, adaptive fan control keeps fan noise to a minimum, and the fully featured DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and configurator web interface feature model-specific presets to optimise DALI CI models.

The Phantom SUB S-100 is based on the same principles as the K-60 LP bass driver, featuring an extremely stiff, custom aluminium cone, combining long-throw capability with an ultra-shallow profile. Additionally, this speaker is the first to utilise CSS (Constant Surface Surround) tech co-developed by Purifi Audio, Denmark.

We're told that this technology offers a unique surround geometry of alternating positive and negative regions, keeping surround modulation to a minimum.

OBERON GRAND VOKAL

DALI's Oberon Grand Vokal two-way, full-range centre speaker measures 201x700x310 mm (HxWxD). It is designed for large rooms and can support floorstanding speakers such as the Danish brand's Oberon 7 and 9 models - the Oberon 5 impressed us as it is!

The Oberon Grand Vokal is loaded with a pair of 7-inch SMC-based woofers and an “oversized”, ultra-lightweight, 29 mm soft dome tweeter crossing over at 2500 Hz. All of which promise to deliver “crystal-clear dialogue, sound effects and music at any volume”. The claimed frequency range is 45-26,000 Hz ±3 dB.

The tweeter's membrane is constructed from an ultra-lightweight weave fabric, apparently half the weight of most models on the market. DALI tells us that “the extended frequency response is combined with super wide dispersion” and, by including a patented SMC disc in the woofer magnet's iron pole-piece, the Grand Vokal greatly reduces mechanical distortion for a relaxed midrange with lots of detail”.

Pricing and availability for Australia have not yet been confirmed.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
