Velodyne’s Latest MicroVee Subwoofer Boasts The X-Factor

Carbon Kevlar drivers and more add the X-factor to Velodyne's latest potent-yet-compact MicroVee subwoofer.

Velodyne's MicroVee X has landed in the UK. Measuring just 230 x 230 x 250mm (WxHxD) while tipping the scales at 9kg, makes it perfect for smaller spaces while still being able to offer reasonable placement options.

Velodyne launched the original MicroVee in 2006, which was refreshed by the MicroVee MKII in June 2020. According to the manufacturer, the new MicroVee X delivers 800W dynamic (300W RMS) from its Class AB amplification. While this is lower than the quoted figure for its predecessor, the current capability of the new amp design is higher than the MKII and so should prove a significant boost in performance for the MicroVee X, enabling a 15 percent volume increase across the frequency range compared to its forerunner.

According to Velodyne, the forward-firing 6.5-inch active driver is a high excursion double vented basket unit with PP inforced membrane. Additionally, this is partnered with two side-mounted passive radiators of the same size to produce a claimed frequency response of (± 3 dB) 32-180 Hz.

Furthermore, you get Velodyne's Digital Drive Control System (DDCS), an active signal-based approach that promises linear cone movement, controlling the unit's frequency and distortion characteristics. According to the spec sheet, the MicroVee X manages to reduce distortion to only around 16-percent of the values of comparable models. You can also bypass the internal crossover thanks to the Subwoofer Direct feature, which is said to hand the MicroVee X improved performance. Finally, the patented Energy Recovery System should increase the unit's efficiency.

A handy addition is a remote control that provides direct access to volume, phase and crossover adjustments. Inputs are gold-plated stereo RCA, LFE, and nickel-plated high-level.

Available in Black and White satin finish, the Velodyne MicroVee X are available now for £912.50 +VAT.
