Technics SL-1210G Direct-Drive Turntable Announced

Technics announces the SL-1210G high-end direct-drive turntable.

Technics has officially unveiled its new SL-1210G Direct Drive Turntable that takes the tech spec of the Applause Award-winning SL-1200G and wraps them in a minimalist black finish.

Contrary to those who simply dismiss it as a DJ deck, the SL-1200 was launched as a popular hi-fi direct-drive turntable in 1972. It quickly became a best-seller chalking up cumulative sales of 3,500,000 units for the series. Admired for its powerful torque, easy operation, and high durability, it found popularity with audio enthusiasts and, later, DJs.

The Technics SL-1210G sports an iron-coreless direct-drive motor with double rotor/single stator and boasts incredibly stable rotation, free from cogging and with the SL's legendary torque. In addition, a hybrid encoder is employed for rotational speed detection, using a Hall Sensor for rotor position detection.

The SL-1210G comes with a highly sensitive yet robust tonearm made from cold-drawn magnesium and so, we are told, possesses a high damping effect. Additionally, the high-precision tonearm bearings use a cut-processed housing for high initial motion sensitivity and promise to ensure accurate reading of the music information etched in the record's groove.

The three-layer platter with high vibration-damping performance should also aid undisturbed tracking. Technics states that each platter is individually adjusted for balance.

Finally, the four-layer high-rigidity cabinet features a heavy aluminium top plate and high-damping silicone-rubber insulators to effectively shut out vibration.

Frank Balzuweit, European Technics Product Manager, told StereoNET:

We learned from the huge success of the limited edition SL-1210GAE, which was launched in June 2020 and almost immediately sold out. We realised there was high demand for a 'regular' black version of this flagship 1200 Series model. In its striking black finish, the new SL-1210G possesses genuine elegance.

Technics proudly states, “The overall quality and performance level of the SL-1210G defines the highest turntable standards, deserving to be partnered with the very finest phono cartridges for truly inspirational vinyl playback”.

The SL-1210G will be available in Europe from October 2021 for £3,499.
