Panasonic’s New PMX802 Microsystem Packs Technics Smarts
Panasonic has launched the PMX802 all-in-one streaming hi-fi system with Technics DNA.
Panasonic's PMX802 has been designed to fit on a bookshelf or unit while offering a CD player and DAB+ radio for those who like a more traditional source. However, this new microsystem also offers bang-up-to-date services such as Chromecast, WiFi, Bluetooth and Airplay 2 connectivity, alongside support for Google Assistant and Spotify Connect.
The PMX802 is bundled with a pair of three-way speakers wrapped in wooden cabinets and sporting silk dome tweeters giving the system the ability to reach a claimed 50 kHz. These are pushed along by a JENO amplifier (Jitter Elimination, Noise-Shaper Optimization Engine) designed by Technics.
The headline feature for this compact system is its hi-res streaming chops. Its Chromecast tech supports services such as Tidal and Deezer, courtesy of Airable. You can also play FLAC files up to 24-bit/192kHz from an external drive via the front-mounted USB socket.
Additionally, Panasonic has included a 'CD High-Res Re-Master' function. We are told that this improves CD playback quality with a similar 'remastering' process applied to lower quality digital files coming at it via Bluetooth, for example.
If you want the PMX802 to bolster your movie or gaming soundtrack, you can hook-up your TV via its optical or AUX inputs. The latter has an auto-play function that will wake-up the Panasonic system when you switch your telly on.
The PMX802 is “available soon” and offered in silver or black finishes, costing £549.
WHAT WE THINK
There's not always room for a 'proper' system and whether you're wanting decent quality audio in your office, bedroom, conservatory, shed or second room, there will be occasions where a portable Bluetooth speaker just won't cut it. Thank goodness, then, for little PMX systems such as this from Panasonic and Marantz's Melody.
