Jelco Tonearms Bows Out

It appears that Jelco tonearms is the hi-fi industry's first major victim of Covid-19.

In an email to its distributors, Jelco tonearm's parent company, Ichikawa Jewel Co. Ltd, has announced it will be closing its doors for good.

Jelco Closes

Ichikawa Jewel Company has been manufacturing phono cartridges, tonearms and turntable accessories for around a century and has sadly had to stop business.
President and CEO of Ichikawa Jewel, Takako Ichikawa, sent an email to all his distributors advising them of the closure, which states the combination of the Covid-19 pandemic and the difficulty of maintaining the company's engineering tools as the cause.

The novel coronavirus pandemic continue to have a significant impact on our production lines, and so I have decided to terminate our business effective immediately.

For the past few years, the business has endured a decline in labor productivity due to health issues arising from our aging skilled engineers. Furthermore, due to our obsolete mechanical equipment, performing maintenance on them has become difficult.

The email, dated May 11th, goes on to state that as well as Jelco not accepting any new orders neither will it be able to repair any products.

With this latest news and SME stopping production of its tonearms other than the ones fitted to its turntables, this will leave a substantial gap in the OEM tonearm arena. A possible opportunity for someone but sad to see such a big name leave the industry.
