Cambridge Audio SX Speaker Range Updated

Cambridge Audio has given its SX series of speakers a refresh.

Cambridge Audio's SX series was first introduced back in 2013. Designed by the firm's London-based engineering team, the latest iteration sports an all-new matte black finish and new logo and promises to cover not only stereo hi-fi, but help create an affordable 7.1 AV system for home cinema.

The new SX range comprises the rear-ported SX-50 and larger front-ported SX-60 standmount speakers, SX-70 centre speaker, SX-80 floorstanding speakers, and SX-120 subwoofer.

All except the woofer (obvs) feature a 25mm silk dome tweeter with a dedicated foam damper behind the diaphragm that, we're told, reduces reflections and helps to create a wide and effortless soundstage.

The SX-50 pairs the tweeter with a 13.5cm treated paper cone mid/bass unit, whereas the SX-60 opts for a 16.5cm mid/bass driver. The SX-80 rear-ported floorstander doubles up with a pair of the 16.5cm options, and the centre speaker rocks a brace of 10cm varients.

The cabinets feature a rigid MDF construction and have been designed to minimise standing waves and keep vibration to a minimum, says Cambridge Audio.

The floorstanders have a quoted frequency range of 40Hz–20kHz, and the smallest bookshelf speakers manage 50Hz-22kHz. Between those, the SX-60 claims 41Hz-22 kHz and the centre-channel, 65Hz – 20kHz.

The SX-120 subwoofer features a 70W RMS amplifier feeding a custom 20cm long-throw driver taking it down to frequencies between 34Hz-150Hz. Additionally, you get individual volume, crossover frequency and phase adjustment controls for precise set up in your room, as well as auto on/off detection that helps conserve power when the subwoofer is not in use.
