beyerdynamic Announces DT 1770 Pro & DT 1990 Pro MKII
German headphones brand beyerdynamic has finally released an update to the DT 1770 Pro and DT 1990 Pro with the newly developed TESLA.45 driver. Both popular headphones, the DT Pro series, were highly well-regarded by studio mixing and audio producers thanks to their balanced and transparent sound.
The new closed-back DT 1770 Pro MKII is said to have a more lively profile with deeper bass while still offering transparent mids and detailed highs.
Kevin Nietsch, Product Manager at beyerdynamic, told StereoNET:
“It is particularly important both in the vocal cabin and when recording instruments that the artist feels comfortable. This often intangible aspect can turn a good track into an excellent one. The DT 1770 PRO MKII, therefore, has a sound profile that is fun, but at the same time always remains detailed and precise.”
The new DT 1990 Pro MKII is slightly different. Its open-back design affords the headphones a natural, spatial sound with precise and far-reaching bass playback. An everyday quibble with the previous DT 1990 Pro was that the treble was a little sharp, so beyerdynamic has tapered down the response around 8kHz while keeping the detail in the 10kHz range.
Ante Mihalj, the Acoustic Engineer in charge of the beyerdynamic Pro range, shared with StereoNET:
“With the DT 1990 PRO MKII, we had a very balanced sound in mind. Modern productions often have very complex treble frequencies. That’s why the DT 1990 PRO MKII now reproduces trebles a little more smoothly than its somewhat brasher predecessor.”
The heart of these two headphones is the new TESLA.45 driver, developed and manufactured in Heilbronn, Germany. With the optimised neodymium magnet, more than one tesla of magnetic flux density can be achieved in the air gap of the magnetic system. The total harmonic distortion and impulse behaviour are also improved compared to their predecessor, resulting in a more precise sound.
The diaphragm is made of PEEK, a high-performance polymer, for precise bass reproduction, and the voice coil is made of aluminium-coated copper wire to reduce weight for a more refined treble.
Beyerdynamic didn’t skimp on comfort. Its spring steel headband provides durability while memory foam and leatherette provide wearing comfort. Velour ear pads help prevent heat build-up, and both the headband and ear pads can be easily replaced.
Both models come with two sets of earpads. The DT 1770 Pro MKII has velour ear pads for comfort alongside leatherette ones for sound insulation. The DT 1990 Pro MKII has the Producing Velours as the standard pair fitted on, which provides a slight bass boost, while there’s also the Mixing & Mastering Velours for an analytical sound.
Inside the box for both are a 3-meter detachable cable and a 5-meter spiral cable, both equipped with lockable 3-pin Mini-XLR connectors, all contained within a hard case.
The beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII and DT 1990 Pro MKII headphones retail for £480/ €549 and are now available.
