Audio-Technica AT-MC2022 Limited-Edition Dual Moving Coil Cartridge
Only 60 Audio-Technica AT-MC2022 dual moving coil cartridges will be made to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary.
Audio-Technica's AT-MC2022 promises cutting-edge technology for analogue audio aficionados, vinylistas and audiophiles and is the result of the company's 60 years of research and development.
We are told that the innovative moving coil cartridge produces a sharp, vibrant soundscape and utilises an integrated microlinear profile stylus and 0.22 mm cantilever formed of a single, lab-grown diamond. Audio-Technica states that this unique construction eliminates the distortion caused by conventional bonding of stylus to cantilever, allowing for a purer transmission of the vibration from the record groove to the coils.
Yosuke Koizumi, Cartridge Engineer at Audio-Technica, explained:
One of the most outstanding sound characteristics of the AT-MC2022 is its fast transient response thanks to the vibration propagation of the diamond cantilever. The sound profile is perfectly positioned between two speakers, providing a clear audio reproduction for avid listeners and connecting you closer to your favourite records.
Channel separation is listed as 30 dB (1kHz), with output channel balanced measured as 0.5 dB.
The AT-MC2022 adopts the highly efficient magnetic circuit initially developed for the recently launched AT-ART20. The apparent result is a greater magnetic flux density and output voltage (0.55 mV (1kHz, 5 cm/sec).
This is all wrapped up in a body made of titanium and aluminium, with an elastomer undercover to reduce unwanted resonance. Meanwhile, the black accents on the cartridge body are said to be inspired by traditional shippo enamelling (Japanese cloisonné). Finally, the hand-crafted Ion plating achieves high durability and a stunning mirror finish.
Installing the AT-MC2022 should also prove easy, thanks to the threaded mounting holes and high-quality gold-plated terminal pins. The manufacturer adds that the gold plating is approximately 30 times thicker than conventionally used and should reduce contact resistance.
The cartridge weighs around 9.6g and requires 1.6 to 2.0 g (1.8 g standard) tracking force and 20° vertical tracking angle.
The Audio-Technica AT-MC2022 comes in a specially designed walnut storage case featuring an acrylic window with a laser-engraved 60th anniversary logo and serial number. A lovely touch is that the packaging uses traditional Japanese Echizen Washi paper. With only 60 being made, the AT-MC2022 will be available for purchase this coming Winter for an RRP of £8,900/ €10,000.
