Yamaha Unveils New SR-B40A Soundbar and Subwoofer System

Yamaha has now announced the SR-B40A, a soundbar and wireless subwoofer system suited for smaller apartments while still offering features like Dolby Atmos, different sound modes and more.

After the recent release of the True X Wireless Surround Sound System, Yamaha has now announced the SR-B40A, a soundbar and wireless subwoofer system suited for smaller apartments while still offering features like Dolby Atmos, different sound modes and more.

Inside the soundbar, you’ll find a full-range cone and two tweeters with a maximum output power of 50-watt per channel. On the rear of the soundbar, you get an optical port as well as an HDMI port that supports eARC and CEC, which allows for the soundbar’s basic functions to be controlled via a TV remote. For a wireless connection, the SR-B40A supports Bluetooth, so users will be able to beam audio from their phone rather than have to turn on the television just to enjoy some music.

At 6.8cm tall and 91cm wide, the soundbar will be able to fit on most TV consoles nicely, although it might be a touch small for televisions bigger than 55 inches.

A wireless subwoofer is also included in the package, and with a 100-watt power output, the subwoofer will certainly be enough to fill most rooms with an impactful low-end. Because the subwoofer is wireless, it can be placed anywhere in the room and be set facing forward or sideways.

Dolby Atmos is also essential to any soundbars released in this day and age for immersive content entertainment, and the SR-B40A promises to provide a sound field that “envelops you and transports you deeper into the story as it unfolds on screen”.

The company says the SR-B40A offers “extraordinarily natural and realistic reproduction of stereo soundscapes”, with new improvements to the Clear Voice and Bass Extension software features, which allows for even more clarity when it comes to human voices and a deeper, more punchy bassline respectively.

To further tweak the soundbar to one’s liking, though, there’s a Tone Control function that’s accessible through Yamaha’s Sound Bar Remote smartphone app. The app (as well as the remote included in the box) can also switch the soundbar between four sound modes tailored to different content: Movie, Stereo, Standard and Game.

The Yamaha SR-B40A will be available from July 2023 at an RRP of US$399.95

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
