Yamaha has chosen today to release its TW-E5B wireless earbuds for good reason. Today is World Hearing Day and, thanks to the company's Listening Care technology that's pitched as “intelligent equalisation at any volume”, you'll not damage your ears.

Of course, the Yamaha TW-E5B sport a selection of four stylish colours and look rather natty. However, the company's True Sound ethos based on the manufacturer's position as a world leader in music instrument making and the promise of crystal-clear calls might be higher on your wishlist.

As well as the Listening Care tech, the TW-E5B also boasts an ambient sound function and gaming mode.

So, Listening Care, what does it actually do? Yamaha tells us that, due to how our hearing works, we often feel there is a lack of high and low frequencies when listening to music at low volumes. So, to hear these frequency extremes, we're tempted to turn the volume up excessively. This, of course, can be damaging over time. However, Yamaha's Listening Care feature “adjusts the difficult-to-hear high and low frequencies so that the original tonal balance of the music is maintained”. The upshot is that you get enjoyable music even at lower volumes.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) published a report in 2019 that estimated that “more than one billion young people are at risk of developing avoidable, permanent hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices” adding that this may be compounded by the daily wear of earbuds and headphones at high volume levels. Listening Care aims to reduce this figure.

Yamaha tells us that, to achieve True Sound, the E5B's 7mm driver unit and exit are placed on the same axis as the sound conduit, eliminating obstacles as much as possible. Additionally, this goes for the rest of the earbuds' internal structure, as this also mitigates protrusions “to prevent interference from unnecessary noise and echoes.”

Furthermore, a small hole on the rear of the earbuds should control the back pressure generated by the driver and maximise the use of air inside the earbuds for a rich low range and three-dimensional presentation, says Yamaha.

The TW-E5B should also be comfortable thanks to its unique 'edge' designed to fit in your ear better. In addition, the oval shape of the earpieces and four supplied sizes of eartips should ensure a secure fit.

Rounding things up, the E5B features IPX5 water and sweat resistance, and up to 30 hours of battery stamina (8.5 hours from the earbuds and 21.5 hours from the case). In addition, they have on-ear controls for phone calls, music playback and Siri / Google Assistant activation and is partnered by custom EQ settings in the Headphone Control App.

The Yamaha TW-E5B earbuds will be available from April, priced at around US$170.
