Sony Announces WF-1000XM4 True Wireless ANC Earphones
Sony announces its new WF-1000XM4 high-res audio-friendly true wireless earphones.
Sony's WF-1000XM4 true wireless in-ear headphones add LDAC support which means up to 990kbps Bluetooth throughput from device to earphones bringing superior-sounding results. Although, these seem to lack aptX HD.
Further improvements are found amongst the XM4's hardware. Here you will find a 10% smaller earpiece that rocks a new 6mm dynamic driver boasting a 20% increase in magnet volume and improved active noise cancellation fed by two microphones (one feed-back, the other feed-forward), along with an all-new Bluetooth SoC, imaginatively dubbed Integrated Processor V1.
The Integrated Processor V1 is said to enhance sound quality, reduce distortion, and enable LDAC and DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) Extreme. With help from Edge-AI, we're told that DSEE upscales compressed digital music files in real-time, dynamically recognising individual elements of each song, such as vocals or interludes, while restoring high-range sound lost in compression. We're told to expect a richer, more complete listening experience because of this.
Also, as a bonus for those who enjoy surround sound as you walk, the new Sony buds support 360 Reality Audio when fed by TIDAL, Deezer, or Nugs.
Apparently leaning on all of Sony's heritage since releasing the very first in-ear headphones in 1982 (MDR-E252), the WF-1000XM4 sports newly-developed Noise Isolation Earbud Tips for an improved fit. We're told that the new tips are made from a unique foam material that maximises the surface contact area between the earbud tip and the ear canal and results in “a snug fit with good noise isolation - beyond what is possible with silicone and other synthetic rubber-like materials.” Furthermore, the Sony | Headphones Connect App now helps you find the right fit for your ears.
The Automatic Wind Noise Reduction mode detects a windy environment and automatically suppresses it. So even on windy days, you'll stay totally immersed with your playlist, and your call quality will also receive a boost.
Meanwhile, handed down from the WF-1000XM3 is the XM4's IPX4 water-resistance rating, Google/Alexa skills, ANC that reacts to your environment, and putting your hand over one earpiece activates Quick Attention Mode. The Speak to Chat function will also pause your music when you start talking.
Stamina is quoted at 8-hours runtime from a single charge (with 16 more from the carry case) with a 5-minute quick charge returning 60 minutes of playback time, says Sony. Naturally, Qi wireless charging is accepted here, too.
The WF-1000XM4 is available in Black or Platinum Silver with a US$279.99 | S$379 RRP.
