Huawei FreeBuds Studio Headphones Pips Apple to the Post

Huawei has just gazumped Apple with its Studio wireless over-ear headphones.

Huawei is looking to take another chunk out of Apple's potential market, it has announced its rather confusingly named Huawei FreeBuds Studio. Where the FreeBuds are wireless earbuds, the FreeBuds Studio are over-ear headphones - just like the AirPods Studio from the Cupertino tech giant will be.

Huawei's FreeBuds Studio premium headphones feature dual connection, which means you can simultaneously connect with two devices without needing to disconnect and re-connect. Not only does the dual connection work with Huawei all-scenario devices but also with Android, iOS and Windows-based devices too. Add to that the custom four-layer 40mm polymer diaphragm driver and 65mm earcups, you also get three active noise cancellation modes, and Huawei's self-developed L2HC wireless audio codec, which promises an audio transmission rate of up to 960kbps and a 4Hz-48kHz frequency range. Finally, the design is said to include dual-layer isolation. Not bad for the company's first ANC full-sized headphones.

The FreeBuds Studio's active noise cancelling (ANC) utilises a built-in IMU environment sensor along with a new six-microphone system. Together this array of tech detects your sound environment and uses those six mics for call noise reduction by focusing on your voice and cutting out background noise. As well as the three ANC modes, you get an awareness mode and voice mode – which should allow you to stay aware when out walking, and have a clear conversation without removing the headphones - another benefit of those half-dozen mics and their vocal focus.

If you've ever used Bluetooth headphones or earphones in busy stations such as Kings Cross, Liverpool Street or St Pancras in rush-hour, you know that drop-outs are commonplace. However, Huawei proudly boasts that its FreeBuds Studio scores an industry first with its dual antenna that's said to offer 360° omnidirectional Bluetooth signal coverage for a more stable connection.

As for battery stamina, on a full charged, the FreeBuds Studio can send music to your ears for 20 hours with ANC on, or 24 hours with it switched off. A ten-minute quick charge hands the Huawei FreeBuds Studio five hours of music playback with ANC on, or eight hours with it off.
