Focal Clear Mg Professional Headphones Released
Focal has gone official with its new open-backed professional headphones as spotted in the intro of its recent Celestee release video.
Focal's Clear Mg Professional is targetted at music producers and sound engineers with the French brand stating its ambition for the new cans to become the leading professional headphones.
Following four years of research and development, the Clear Mg, as its name suggests, sport 40mm full-range drivers with magnesium 'M’-shaped inverted domes instead of the aluminium/ magnesium version found in the first Clear Professional headphones. The Focal engineers are said to have optimised the material to produce lightness, rigidity and damping.
The new cone is paired with a frameless 25mm-diameter and 5.5mm- high copper voice coil, which together promise a more precise, detailed delivery across the full quoted frequency response of 5Hz–28kHz while preserving excellent tonal balance. This is also aided by the open grille inside the earcup which we're told extends the high frequencies and follows the 'M' profile of the cone more closely to further reduce adverse effects.
With a 24kHz breakup, the high frequencies are extremely linear, and the transient signals are respected, says Focal. Further specs include a 104dB SPL / 1mW @ 1kHz sensitivity and 55 Ohm impedance while THD is listed as 0.25% @ 1kHz / 100dB SPL.
Naturally, comfort is essential, especially for those hardworking engineers and producers who spend hours on end perfecting their work. So, as well as looking good, the Clear Mg Professional needs to work ergonomically. To this end, the perforated microfibre and leather-covered headband displays a constant curve with the headphones' weight distributed evenly across the head. The solid aluminium yoke is covered with a structured black paint, handing it scratch resistance and a cleanly stealthy design. Additionally, the 20mm memory foam padded earpads are also wrapped in the same red microfibre fabric as the underside of the headband.
The Clear Mg Professional comes with a thermoformed carrying case shaped to snugly fit the headphones along with two low-resistivity OFC 24 AWG copper cables - one 5 metres terminated in a 6.35mm TRS, and the other, 1.2 metres terminated with a 3.5 TRS. You also get a 3.5mm to 6.35 stereo jack adapter.
The Focal Clear Mg Professional is priced at US$1,490 (~S$1,999)
