Devialet Launches New Gemini II Earbuds

Devialet’s first take on true wireless earbuds with the original Devialet Gemini was a good first attempt, and two years later, we’re now getting the Gemini II earbuds with a bunch of improvements.

Franck Lebouchard, Devialet’s CEO, told StereoNet:

“We have condensed 15 years of expertise in acoustic research and development into Devialet Gemini II to deliver an even bigger sound experience in our smallest package yet. Driven by our vision to continually break boundaries in audio design, Devialet Gemini II’s new design offers a universal luxury listening experience thanks to improved ergonomy that lets listeners experience industry-leading proprietary technologies without feeling the earbuds in place.”

The company has completely revamped the case design for the Gemini II, with a compact and sleeker shape that more closely resembles other competitors in the market. This time around, Devialet is offering an Iconic White colour option and a Opéra de Paris edition in addition to the standard Matte Black. The case comes with a ridged design on both the top and bottom encasing a shiny, metallic strip that goes around the middle. The size decrease comes at the cost of the replaceable battery feature that was present in the first-gen, however, but it’s a small price to pay for being truly pocketable this time around.

The earbuds have also been shrunken down slightly, coming in at 16x23x26mm in comparison to the first gen’s 15x18x33mm. Weight-wise, the earbuds are 2 grams lighter at 6 grams per earbud, while the case has gone down to 49 grams versus the original 76 grams.

Inside, the Gemini II is using a brand new custom 10mm titanium-coated driver while offering the same SBC, AAC and aptX codecs. Thankfully, Bluetooth connectivity has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.2.

The active noise cancellation (ANC) has been improved as well, with Devialet claiming up to 40dB of noise cancellation thanks to the Adaptive Noise Cancellation technology that was developed specifically for the Gemini II and is supported by a dual-microphone array with digital filters using the company’s proprietary Internal Delay Compensation (IDC) technology.

Devialet has also added Active Wind Reduction (AWR) to the Gemini II to reduce wind noise thanks to a layer of anti-wind material shielding the microphones from wind. Paired with a new bone conduction sensor, the company claims that every phone call will sound clear with no interference if you’re dealing with a windy environment.

There’s also IPX4 water resistance here, but the battery life has decreased slightly to five hours on a single charge in the earbuds, and a total of 22 hours with the charging case.

Retailing at US$450 | S$629 for the Matte Black and Iconic White colours and at US$650 | S$929 for the Opéra de Paris edition, the Devialet Gemini II is now available for purchase.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
