Denon PerL Wireless Buds Measure Your Ears
Denon's new PerL range of wireless earbuds assesses your hearing for a bespoke listening profile and optimal sound.
PerL, Denon's abbreviation for Personalised Listening, is a new two-model range of wireless earbuds leveraging parent company Masimo's patented "Adaptive Acoustic Technology" (AAT), which enables you to create a personal audio profile for a unique listening experience - possibly the result of the suspected Nuraphone purchase.
Consisting of the premium Denon PerL Pro and the slightly less-equipped Denon PerL. Both noise-cancelling earphones feature AAT, designed to automatically measure your hearing to create a profile perfectly tuned to you by measuring faint otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). These OAEs are analysed to determine your ears' sensitivity to given frequencies. The results are then crunched by the AI-powered Denon PerL app, adapting the sound to provide your bespoke hearing profile.
Joe Kiani, Founder and CEO of Masimo, told StereoNET:
The era of one-sound-fits-all is over. PerL automatically determines the optimal sound for each individual to cater to your unique ears. I am personally blown away by how good PerL Pro is. I have not heard my music like this since I was 18... We can't wait to have our customers join us in this new paradigm.
Furthermore, Denon boasts that the PerL Pro buds provide "a streaming experience similar to listening to a CD" while offering a surround sound effect courtesy of Dirac Virtuo that "enhances the overall audio experience". Additionally, the PerL Pro gets two-way multipoint connectivity while supporting Qualcomm AptX Lossless audio and Bluetooth 5.3, adding aptX Adaptive, aptX Classic, AAC and SBC to the codec list.
Meanwhile, alongside the AAT tech, the standard PerL model features Bluetooth 5.0, supporting AAC, SBC and standard aptX codecs. ANC offers a transparent "social mode", allowing in some of the outside in. The PerL is loaded with four mics, with the PerL Pro boasting eight microphones for upgraded noise cancelling, automatically adjusting the cancellation level according to the amount of environmental noise.
The PerL Pro is quoted as achieving eight hours of battery stamina on a single charge, with a total of 32 hours via the charging case via a USB-A to USB-C connection. A five-minute quick charge boost translates to an hour of playback. PerL offers six hours of battery life on the earbuds, 24 hours with the charging case, and they'll need a ten-minute quick charge for an hour of playback.
There are a limited number of Denon PerL Pro and PerL available in the USA, with models arriving in Asia later this year costing US$349 and US$199, respectively.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
