Sonus Faber Announces Maxima Amator Floorstanding Speakers
Sonus faber's Maxima Amator is very much a contemporary loudspeaker but still contains much of the DNA of the Italian brand's classic two-way designs.
The new Maxima Amator joins the Minima Amator II and Electa Amator II stand-mounts in the company's Heritage collection. Furthermore, the speaker uses the same drivers as the Electa Amator II.
This sees the Maxima Amator loaded with a 28 mm D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) “Arrow Point” tweeter with Neodymium magnetic motor system and a solid spruce wood acoustic labyrinth rear chamber, alongside a 180 mm mid-range unit with an air-dried membrane made of cellulose pulp and natural fibres. This driver is mounted on an in-house designed die-cast aluminium basket.
The Maxima Amator floorstanding loudspeakers sport a solid walnut cabinet. Entirely constructed in Italy, Sonus faber is said to have employed modern woodworking methods to exploit the performance benefits of a solid-wood chassis. The rich walnut is enhanced further by a real leather wrap on both the front baffle and rear panel.
Within the cabinet are three separate chambers said to increase rigidity, minimise resonance and shield the crossover. Additionally, the latter is further protected by a dedicated compartment, visible from the back of the cabinet.
Regarding that crossover, Sonus faber has developed this explicitly for the Maxima Amator. The IFF Crossover (Interactive Fusion Filtering) design foregoes a conventional first-order system, with non-academic transfer functions based on the company's accelerated progressive slopes. The unit hands over duties to the tweeter from the mid-range driver at 2.1kHz.
The result is that this 4 ohm floorstander has a quoted frequency response of 35Hz-35kHz and 88 dB SPL (2,83V/1 m) sensitivity.
The Maxima Amator is expected to be available in North America late February 2021, and will sell for $15,000.
