FiiO’s Newstalgia Persists With The DM13 Portable CD Player

The Discman-inspired DM13 follows the success of FiiO's CP13 cassette player.

FiiO continues to plunder yesteryear with the DM13 Discman-esque portable CD player.

Where it is now accepted that vinyl records have made a comeback, the compact disc is not far behind. FiiO has combined this knowledge with the fascination with retro tech we've never owned - something we like to call newstalgia.

The DM13 CD player features a 3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced headphone output, so it should suit a wide range of headphones. Dedicated analogue line output, SPDIF digital output, and USB output options allow the unit to be integrated into your existing hi-fi. You can also plug the DM13 into active speakers or hook it up to a portable speaker's auxiliary input.

FiiO adds some 21st-century sprinkles through aptX HD Bluetooth connectivity, which means the player can connect to wireless headphones or speakers. As well as CDs, the DM13 supports FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, and MP3 file formats.

The DM13's built-in battery promises up to eight hours of playback on a single charge. However, if you're spinning silver discs at home, you can use its dedicated desktop mode, bypassing the internal battery in favour of mains power.

The DM13 will be available in silver from September for $179 USD, with red, blue, titanium, and black finishes arriving later this year.

The DM13 will be showcased at this year's CanJam London event, which will take place this weekend at Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, London.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
