Chord BerTTi Compact Ultima Amp Launched

Chord Electronic's BerTTi brings Ultima amplification technology to a new form-factor and more attainable price point.

Unveiled at High End Munich, 2023 BerTTi is the new, fully-balanced 75-watt (8 Ω) compact stereo power amplifier using the latest dual-feed-forward error-correction topology wrapped in a compact case. It joins the Hugo TT 2 and M Scaler in Chord Electronic's TT (Table Top) range of products, replacing TToby while offering a new entry point to owning an amp featuring the brand's latest Ultima technology.

Designed by Chord Electronics owner and founder John Franks, the advanced Ultima error-correction technology monitors and immediately corrects signals before the output stage and promises “astonishing accuracy”.

BerTTi follows a line of full-width Ultima-technology power amplifiers, the most recent being the Ultima Integrated which was also announced at the Munich show. Both can be seen being introduced to us by Maurice Tryner in the video above.

BerTTi's casework is precision-machined from solid aircraft-grade aluminium and is available in Jett Black or Argent Silver finishes. Connectivity-wise, you will find balanced and unbalanced inputs, gold-plated loudspeaker outputs, plus a 10 A IEC power inlet.

Meanwhile, under the hood are two modified power supplies for increased performance, plus an additional auxiliary power rail for the front end, providing extra voltage to drive the custom-made MOSFETs.

The result is a claimed frequency response of 5 Hz-100 kHz (+/- 0.5 dB). In addition, THD is given as 0.008% alongside an SNR of 87 dB (A-weighted).

Chord's BerTTi has been designed to be paired with the Hugo TT 2 DAC/preamp to create an immensely capable compact digital system with the option to upscale audio to 705.6 kHz, 16x CD's native resolution, by adding the Hugo M Scaler upscaler and creating a powerful three-box system.

John Franks told StereoNET:

BerTTi utilises our proprietary Ultima technology, which continuously monitors the electrical and thermal performance parameters for each of the MOSFET power devices used within this advanced design. This additional circuitry adds an extra layer of control in the power components' topology that lowers all distortion modes when compared to ordinary high-quality amplifier designs. BerTTi can drive loudspeakers, from bookshelf types to the hardest-to-drive floorstanders, without difficulty.

In the UK, Chord Electronics' BerTTi is available to pre-order now for £3,995, with delivery expected September 2023. Local pricing and availability has not yet been confirmed.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
