Happy
Calling audiophiles fools in an audiophile forum, interesting angle. And only a handful here would readily admit they're audiophile for whatever reason. It's like you've made an effort to join the alcoholics rehab community and hesitate to admit you're an alco. Juicester
My take is, even if there are no variables - all cables sound the same, all amps sound the same, all CD players and turntables sound the same (which of course I don't think is the case) the Fact that we Perceive improvements and gain increased enjoyment from them (even if in fact they aren't there) it's WORTH it. Perception is reality; not fact.
Guest guru
That's 10 minutes of my life I want back. I do wish that these video "wannabes" would also post vision and sound of their own systems so we can get a point of reference as to what they are able to achieve in the reproducing of recordings. Kevin
Hi Stephen, I can hear differences between cables but it worries me as it offends what little scientific sensibilities I have. There is an ugly reality here - the placebo effect is very real - it probably represents up to 30% of many biological effects. I hope I am susceptible. emesbee
Who is this guy? Some wannabe 'expert' trying to tell us what we all know already, as if he has just discovered it. I bet he listens to mp3 files through Dr Dre headphones and doesn't know any better.
Martykt
Hi Stephen, I can hear differences between cables but it worries me as it offends what little scientific sensibilities I have. There is an ugly reality here - the placebo effect is very real - it probably represents up to 30% of many biological effects. I hope I am susceptible. Kevin The simple answer is your scientific sensibilities don't have to be offended. The use of the Placebo effect when talking about audio and audio cables is just plain wrong. The Placebo effect is in fact to do with medication and physical conditions. placebo effect noun noun: placebo effect; plural noun: placebo effects a beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment. "orthodox doctors dismiss the positive results as a result of the placebo effect" If someone can happen to find a proper scientific peer paper on the placebo effect being to do with hearing and an association with the $$$ something may cost please share, I'm always happy to further my knowledge. The simple truth is we don't have a full understanding and conclusion of why/how cables can make a difference. We do however do know that cables do make a difference as an example there even has been actual maths done on electrical transmission and cables from Oliver Heaveside back in the1880s, this maths was revised later once the signal requirements increased with telephony. To my knowledge this maths has not been revised for the use of an extremely precise complicated audiophile signal. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegrapher%27s_equations No cable regardless of cost, material or construction will have 100% conductivity. There will always be loss. Edited January 23, 2016 by Martykt

Guest jakeyb77
Wether it's a 13 year old boy with Beats or a guy with Bunnings speaker cable or the top of the range Audiophile power cables etc. The end game should be the smile on your face when the music starts. Whatever that takes for you then great!

I think this is being too literal. Yes, the term "placebo effect" relates to medical treatment but it has also become a generic expression (incorrectly, I agree) to describe the impact of one's expectations or biases on their perceptions. So for example, being told that you are listening to a $1000 cable from a leading brand may favourably alter your perception of how you hear and assess that cable. There won't be any scientific papers because it is in essence a 'bastardisation' of the term to argue that if one expects something to sound good (because they are truthfully or misleadingly informed of price and brand) then it will sound good. Having said that, the guy in the Youtube clip is a goose who has likely not had the opportunity to experience a high quality sound system. I couldn't watch more than a minute!
