Guest guru Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Ok the memory fades. The 211 was my pick. The 2A3 didn't have the depth of tone I felt with the 211. A little disappointing.Mr Stenhouse was over borrowing some speakers as he is between purchases and heard the direction of sound that we will be showing so it does exist and is unlike any sound I have heard before in any system so will be most unusual for you to evaluate but very worthwhile. As to the differences in tone, one was a $400k system and the other was about $40k.

joz Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 For any interstate visitors the venue is opposite the Grand Prix track and lake, (if you didn't know) Also its a short walk from St Kilda/Fitroy st if your looking for accomodation away from the CBD, the district also has pleny of eateries. A short drive from Chez Joz to boot 2

The system I was listening to had bags of detail (like shedloads - I thought I was listening to DSD256 through a Nadac for a while there) but at the same time was utterly involving. I came to the conclusion (again) that there is nothing wrong with CD's....I didn't hear any digital artifacts - no glare, no front edge that was annoying..nothing like that. The system had all the micro and macro dynamics you would wish for. I heard accurate tone (timbre), speed of course, great sound-stage (particularly depth) and surprising extension in both directions (gut strings had bite, tympani rolled like thunder) all from an integrated whole in a usual type/size of room. Really captivating. I heard a natural and unforced presentation with an ease I usually only associate with vinyl. I really couldn't find much to moan about - still trying to think something up actually - but bugger me it was pretty perfect to my ears. I could retire with this system and be very happy. I think I said to Brian that it was sort of system that would make me quit the forums and just buy and listen to music; imagine that = an end to my box swapping ways - the classifieds would collapse Oh yeah - I borrowed a set of AN-K's Guru had about the place. He kindly lent them to me just to have something to live with while I make up my mind which way I will go next. Or if I will - delayed consumption is a real option here...the problem with knowing what is out there .... is you know what is out there. And as we all know in this game, you pays you gets. The K's are much fun - easy to drive, seamless, great tone, and with high WAF. I'm running 2-3 wpc SEP with them without issue at sensible levels. I have a suspicion they would scale well with better equipment. Perfect for the apartment dweller (errr... hang on..that's me..). No you don't get the extension of the bigger boxes (GBO) nor the resolution of the more expensive models, but I wouldn't expect to either. That can be a good thing btw. Sometimes less is definitely more when you are in a certain spend bracket. Anyways - I'd recommend sticking your nose in, and seeing if you can hear what I heard or not, less than optimal showroom conditions aside. If you reckon I'm talking bollocks, feel free to tell me so, I won't be offended. Edited January 27, 2016 by Tom.Stopforth 4
Jventer Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I think there are different demographics. Firstly there are the attendees that already are interested . They would like to see what is available at different price points. Secondly I would hope that there are attendees that do not know hifi that are interested in getting into it. I have only attended one HiFi show in my life and I must confess it was very daunting. You see so much stuff at different price points that you are totally confused. I think it would be good to organise it by value., e.g. systems to $5,000, then say $10,000 then $15,000 etc etc. Appreciate that it will be hard to do, so maybe one could still have a mix of rooms, but qualify the equipment on the brochure/catalogue on price range. Whatever you do the mere idea of a show is good and if we can get people to attend it is even better.
New Sensations Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 If you could get Hifiman that would be cool. Doubtful that Dr Fang will travel right now as he's not long had another kid. Moreover, Australian shows aren't like Munich or CES where rooms are (mostly) booked by the international manufacturers themselves. I'd say RMAF is split 70-30 manufacturers to distributors/dealers. For Strayan shows, at least in the majority of cases, it's the local distributor who makes the call - a little like the Japanese distributor show in Tokyo but with a couple local manufacturers added to the mix e.g. Lenehan Audio. Hence guru, who isn't Audio Note the manufacturer, but the distributor thereof in this part of the world. (Do i have that right, Brian?) Anyway... HiFiMAN is represented down under by Busisoft. And someone mentioned Devialet - it's Interdyn who handle their promotion in Australia. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Guest Sime Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 I'm not fussed if the owner of any company is present at the show, I want to see the products and who I'll have to deal with of they ever need a fixin. Now I'm just getting hooked into headphones ( thanks chord......) if I walk into a room chokkas full of heaphones from say, a large reseller of all brands in Australia, I'd be pig in muddin. Hifiman and Beyerdynamic in particular.
Hergest Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Weren't Addicted To Audio at the last Melbourne show with a myriad of headphones on active display? Maybe they might make an appearance.
Guest Sime Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Fingers crossed, but knowing my luck, I'll have a job by then and won't be attending the show.

Rob JC Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 My list of things id like to experience at some stage. If its at the show then awesome. Abyss Headphones Magico - especially the mk2 S5 Giya series from Vivid. Ive heard the B1 and thought it was great! Rockport speakers

Different show completely - that's the Australian HiFi Show put on by the UK's Chester Group and runs in October. *This* show in July is run by Marc, StereoNet's chieftain. Marc has an up to date list of exhibitors on the show's website here: http://hifishow.com.au/exhibitors You have to scroll down quite a way to get a list of exhibitors. No A2A but that's nothing a trip to Kew won't fix. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
alistairm Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Personally, I am interested in seeing a system that is appropriate to the room provided and might actually be affordable, albeit with some saving, some begging and some appropriate quid pro quo to the other half! If you're a local, and can truck in all your big stuff, that's great. But I'd rather see what a manufacturer can put together for a manageable price level than all the stuff that's wildly unaffordable. If you can show me you can do a good system for $5K-$20K I'm likely to be interested in your more exotic gear at some point anyway. If you can knock my socks off for under $5K you definitely have my attention. That said, if you have an absolute statement product... always fun to look at. @@guru Apart from shows, anytime you want to lend me some Audio Note amps for a home demo you know where I live! 2

The other show had previously been known as the Australian Audio & AV Show, until recently, a change of name to Australian HiFi / AV Show. To clearly distinguish our show, hopefully avoid confusion, and better reflect the industry (which in Australia is made up of predominantly brands from around the world), we changed our name to the International HiFi Show, Melbourne. We also have an Auckland venue lined up for New Zealand at a later date. Our exhibitor list is still well and truly a work in progress, with more brands already added this week and some more to come. We also believe in only publishing brands that will actually be present and operating at the show, rather than publishing a distributors entire portfolio of represented brands, which in many cases might not even be there. In some cases, the manufacturer is coming to exhibit or assist where the local distributor has opted not to or cannot. It's a massive expense to exhibit, above and beyond the cost of the room itself, and as such we are very grateful to the amazing amount of support we're already getting. Some exhibitors have had such poor response and return to shows in Australia that they are reluctant to participate again. We hope to make a difference there. One of the other hurdles for exhibitors of course is manpower to staff the rooms. The local press (at least those that have opted to cover our event), has been kind to us also. http://hifishow.com.au/press As we know, traditionally shows in Australia have suffered from a complete lack of marketing - that's no secret. 3

Guest Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 There might just be another Harbeth surprise too
Hergest Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) By the way, I knew that the previous show in Melbourne was put on by the Chester Group and this one is being organised by Marc as SNA , after all I did go to that one and have bought a multi day pass for this one and bought flights and booked a hotel room, but a show is a show is a show regardless of who put it on. I have very high hopes for this, if just the sponsors of the forum showed their wares it would be a ripper of a weekend. What I would personally like to see at the show is a turntable in Guru's Audio Note room. This room is always a favourite of mine regardless of what's being played and whatever medium but there's a couple of lp tracks I'll bring that I'd love to hear this time. Guest guru Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 you don't have to travel to Melbourne to play your tracks hergest, you can just get on a train and travel from the outer west to the inner west anytime. you are always welcome.

As I thought would be the case. The thing is I love my system at home and don't intend on changing anything anytime so I'd feel a bit rude being a tyre kicker of sorts. At the show though I can bask in all the systems on show, yours in particular without any guilt feelings 3
Guest Sime Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 You should use a room that doesn't get allocated and call it "if you think things are expensive, here's why" room and put one of these systems innit. That'll get through the to the head scratchers
