proftournesol Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 What I want is less about what I want to see than to hear, I'd really really like a show where the emphasis is on the music rather than the gear itself. I think that if the music just engages with people in a way they haven't experienced then that's the best advertisement for the gear and makes the most compelling case for high fidelity. Now of course the definition of 'what is good music' differs from person to person but boy am I sick of all that 'hi-fi show music' that normally gets played. How about a Classic Album Sundays type room where you can come and hear a complete album played right through side to side with a DJ introducing and talking about the record? Get Brian Nankervis to do it, get a bunch of well know musos to turn up with their favourite recording and talk about it. 7
klackto Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 Oh...... and a total ban on playing Steely Dan. Forget Steely Dan ...... how about Nils Lofgren's 'Keith Don't Go'. At the last Sydney show it was like every second room was playing it. Wished I had a printed T shirt with 'Keith! Please! ffs GO!' Don't get me wrong , it's a great track, well played and all but like 'Private Investigations' it's a track I've heard more times in an audio demo context than any person should have to endure in a single lifetime. 2

What about LIsa Gerard and dead can dance's into the labyrinth , her first stereo system was AN so it seems logical.I was talking to an audio enthusiast yesterday about the hiend show in Munich earlier this year as he was also there and I commented that I became the same person who attends a show and spends precisely 4 minutes in each room as they have 50 rooms and only 4 hours to do it in except in Germany it was 500 rooms. I used to get upset over spending so much money ,time and effort and all you can do is give me 4 minutes and if the music doesn't hit you in the first 30 seconds, you are out of there on 60 seconds. I don't anymore get aggrieved after wearing those other shoes. After 500 rooms I only found 5 that I liked the sound of . I don't like the maths for 50 exhibitors but we all try, we have anywhere between 24 hrs if we book the room for an extra day earlier or 4 hours if we have car trouble to set up the systems in a room generally found in an inner city terrace and then spend the next 3 days playing dj and saying hello and goodbye 1500 times, answering 3 types of questions at least a thousand times trying to make eye contact with 5000 people entering and exiting your room otherwise they think I'm up myself. Love to play an entire album and chill in the corner, any suggestions? What's going to engage you?

Love to play an entire album and chill in the corner, any suggestions? What's going to engage you? That's a hard question to answer.I respond to real people, usually the quiet ones with no ego. So how does someone like that stand out to someone like me? Maybe a sign that says "No bullshi.t." (An exclamation mark would clearly indicate the opposite). Perhaps a sign stating what you are playing (an entire album) and why (you love music). Or have some cute girls handing out single malt... 1
proftournesol Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 What is most likely to make me leave a room quickly isn't the absence of an absolute hi-end system, its the presence of crap music. It really annoys me most when I wait and wait for a scheduled demo and then finally it starts with the dreaded Diana Kral or Dire Straits etc. I'm outta there. Perhaps a playlist at the door would be most useful 1

I think you are confusing sales and marketing reps who the next week could be selling apartment in south Yarra with short arse balding dudes with a manic sleep deprived look about them wearing comfortable shoes because they will be standing for the next 3 days, cotton polo shirts because the rooms are going to become sauna's and standing beside a large music collection they have laboured over for a week deciding which tracks sound best and in the end, took all of them.
WhoRu? Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 @@guru I would like to see mid-range (?) gear like the AN-E/ SPE HE, would like to learn more about the different level of gear in the Audio Note range, and have the opportunity to compare the Elrog 300B to other 300B tubes. That's just me I would also like an elrog vs other 300b tube comparison!
Guest guru Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 I would also like an elrog vs other 300b tube comparison! The problem with that is the 15 minute wait to let the tubes cool down before handling them as the thoraited filament becomes brittle when hot and has to be cool before handling. Caused a few issues early on with guys tube rolling particularly on the headphone forums. As for the sound, there is significant differences especially in frequency linearity as they do not sound like a 300b at all.

Because they are taller, he will need to run it with the lid off temporarily until I get some spacers made for him long term. We plan on having a very interesting system running so he may need to spend more than 4 minutes listening. Cheers.
Krispy Audio Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 Loving your commentary here Brian, it's spot-on. I think a tube rolling comparison would be fruitless in this kind of environment. The ambient noise levels will vary far too much between tracks, let alone other variables, to make it significant. Also, the amount of minutes lost in the changeover is far too valuable as highlighted in your longer post. If someone walks into a room and there is silence for more than 60 seconds, they're gone. And frustrated. And then the frustration is published online lol. It's a tough gig! As an exhibitor, the prime motive is to plant seeds. Seeds of thought about a particular brand or product that may turn into a more serious demo and possibly purchase down the track. 3
