Forgive the gross generalisations, but I believe it is a legacy of the different timelines between, on the one hand the post-war evolution of female emancipation and on the other the evolution of consumer electronics.

If you agree that Hi-fi as a ‘household investment’ peaked in the 70’s, in the still sexist developed world men were predominantly making these purchase decisions. This despite my suspicions that women were purchasing just as much music at the time (unless there were huge numbers of men secretly buying Abba records), and the smaller, more mobile equipment to play it on. So the association of big, expensive noise boxes with music is generally missing in women, whereas for men growing up at the time they are nostalgic and hugely aspirational. Fewer women in this hobby is a cultural thing not a biological one.

Importantly for our hobby, with ever more mobile, cheaper forms of music playback, Hi-fi is decreasingly aspirational for the youth of either sex. Therefore, we should embrace the resurgence of vinyl and keep our ‘bloody hipster’ or ‘profiteering record label bast4ards’ comments to ourselves. Otherwise gentlemen (and the few ladies), we are in danger of becoming extinct!

Geez, I wish I'd said that.

Mate, my systems were never big on colour....fairly plain Jane.

Well, there it is plain as day to see !

You gotta get that 'colour' into your system (and that doesn't mean colour of sound) because 'sound' does not compute with women!

BTW, has anyone ever encountered a female audio dealer? I don't think I've ever seen a female salesperson in an audio dealer's showroom.

i agree with newman.

face, hair, clothes, and make-up costs too much money.

plus, women are more focused on the kids (if they have some), so would rather spend the money on them and all the things that surround them (education, sports, travel, food, shelter, transport..etc).

also, women are great multi-taskers. to ask them to sit in a designated seat, to do nothing else but keep quiet and listen to music is......just not on, unless it's the last 20 mins before going to bed

Sorry, I was at work in the middle of writing a report on Subjective Wellbeing and the tone kinda leaked into my comment! I'll summarise: Chicks don't dig Hi-fi, cos daddy wouldn't let them play their records on his stereo" :)

Gender equality does not mean gender 'sameness'.

Men and women are different. Easy.

I was in EGG records a few month ago and this woman and her daughter who was all of about 21 years of age were in there shopping.

Now this young lady looked like she was straight out of the late 60's looked very cool, but she bought some awesome titles and some high priced originals and collectible....and I would put her knowledge of records against anyone here, she dead set knew her stuff really well, matrix codes and all.

I'd say women love music as much as men.

That is very different from being audiophiles. As a generalisation, men are into hobbies that involve tinkering and "gear". Our hobby is no different

they just to want hear the music but don't really care about the details.

A certain level of fidelity is required for musical enjoyment for each and every person; it just simply varies how much.

But of course some are just obsessed and\or addicted to higher fidelity or the pursuit of what they think that is.

Not really. most of us here are heavily into 'audio'!

The same can't be said for women.

We all are a minority among men, regarding the obsessive hobby here.

You know that there was a very good designer here pretty recently, knows more about audio design than most here.

Didn't hang around but is active on other forums, as are a couple of others on other forums.

It was a given as per thread topic.

Yes, but that's like saying not 'all' females are bad drivers!

EDIT; Tongue in cheek !

I guess at the end of the day, women don't obsess over the small things.
