Luc Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 So yeah,No Quarter: John Bonham&John Paul Jones, make it what it is. They do don't they. It's undeniably the stand out track on a stand out album and as ever much as Page and Plant seem to (for an instance and no more) carry it they don't do they. Your constantly bought back into the song by either Bonham's enervating double thwacks and thumps and trills on his kit that need no technical fiddling. Then there is Jones' organ and synth...sub farking lime. Page's guitar and Plant's vocals are just adjuncts(good ones but...). Want to argue the point? Meet me out the back then and I'll introduce you to 'Balance' and 'Interest'... For the sake of balance most people lose interest eventually... Seriously though, c'mon...it is the standout track isn't it as it was on/in that oddly compelling live movie 'The Song Remains The Same' . Seen 17 times(by me I think)...yes! 17 times at that movie house in St Kilda that advertised 10 thousand mega zillion watts of blow your head out the door and into Orbost or Hamilton..take your pick and ran it for two sessions every Fri/Sat/Sun for yonks. I used to demolish triple A caps of Lebanese Blonde by smearing them over the tops of those choc topped ice creams  and run back down the aisle and never find where i was sitting but always John Bonham was bashing and the under sung Jones was doing his thing. Occasionally I'd remember the squeeze I was with or not, both equally happy scenarios as you sat back down: Oh! Have we met? Would you like a taste of this ice cream? Hedonistic in extremis. It's still the best track on the album. Argue till the cows come in but it wont matter coz ..it's still the best track on the album and Bonham doesn't get a better gig on the entire album. 7
ZEN MISTER Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Lucius, are you sure you mean 'enervating double thwacks' ? Maybe you meant energising. Have you had your snout in the Sparkling Pearl again? Take care dear heart. Billy.

Agree But, that lead guitar break by page is in my view top ten all time buy any one in any song, it rips at your very soul
JukKluk2 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Hey@@Luc, you have indeed got it in one. No Quarter is the track on Houses of the Holy, no if, no buts. It was this track that decided my current speakers for me. After as many decades as you, I suspect, of loving this song I was not prepared for the revelation that my Vantages delivered me at the start of the song, those opening bass notes. Instead of being low notes on Jones' bass guitar, as every set of speakers I had owned up until then had me believe, they were suddenly revealed in all of their glory as bass pedals, huge and powerful, and then, when Bonham enters the fray...........wow!!! They just don't make 'em like that any more these days, do they?
Luc Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Lucius, are you sure you mean 'enervating double thwacks' ? Maybe you meant energising. Have you had your snout in the Sparkling Pearl again? Take care dear heart. Billy. Your correct of course Billy, I meant energising. May I engage you as my official proof reader for all future posts? I'll supply you with plenty of my secret recipe rustic Greek pies and a suitable beverage as well as complimentary use of my gym to work off the extra kilos you'd assuredly gain if you take up the position and eat all pies. No beer involved last night just a tricksy bottle of Clare Valley red that I should know better than to drink quickly. *Wondering if I was a bit harsh on Page&Plant on reflection? But then again in the movie it was Jones' signature tune wasn't it. Wish I could remember the name of that St Kilda cinema but as I always left in a worse state than when I arrived it's probably no wonder that time has wiped the memory clean of that one.
ZEN MISTER Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 ......mmmmmmm forbidden secret recipe rustic Greek pies. Billy.
Luc Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Astor, could be, distinctly remember the sign out the front advertising 10,000 watts...
almikel Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Great song and great album to be sure, but where's the bass? Maybe it's just my CDs (purchased a few decades ago, so minimal remastering), but I find all Led Zep is lacking in mid bass punch (with no sub bass at all) compared with say Fleetwood Mac Rumours (different genre I know). After reading this thread on the bus this morning I couldn't wait to get home and crank it to hear the amazing bass....disappointed. After my speaker upgrade I seek out music with great mid bass (and low bass is nice but very rare) - and Led Zep don't cut it in that regard. The mid bass crispness/snap you get on something like Fleetwood Mac's Chain doesn't exist on any Led Zep I've heard. I love Led Zep - you'd just lifted my expectations that there was some Led Zep with decent bass Great track though. cheers Mike
Luc Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Don't think I've ever read F/Mac and Led Zep in the same sentence before. But bass runs by J.P.Jones aren't prominent I guess and Houses of The Holy is an album that does come across as registering in the higher scale but ...the music works with his synth work. I can get my little tiny 3.5" drivers breathing in an out in palpitations no worries at all when Bonzo goes the big bash in 'When the Levee Breaks' and also in 'D'yer Make Her' and then there is their last album which is drowned in bass to my clothe ears. System enhancements can change this too obviously.
Whites Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I agree @@almikel. The bass on the Rumours album is clean and powerful which I guess is a reflection on the recording and also the studio. The Sound City studio is where many famous albums were recorded. The David Grohl documentary on the studio is very interesting and the artists comment on the bass in the studio combined with the analogue sound desk.
Luc Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 The bass on my Free album is great too, craps all over F/mac IMO and Andy Fraser just led the way in bass guitar being played as a lead guitar but... it's not Led Zep though nor is F/Mac for that matter, saying that such and such an artist/band did bass recording better or sounder more bass heavy is irrelevant to(this) discussion. Bass Heads need look elsewhere I'm afraid.
almikel Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Hi Luc, understood - you just got me excited with your first post that it was "sub farking time"... I was reading the post on the bus and figured there must have been some Led Zep with good mid bass - yay! ....but no . I still love Led Zep, but continue to seek great mid bass. cheers Mike
almikel Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I'll seek out Free based on your recommendation. Mike
Luc Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 (edited) @@almikel In your other thread I added Mr Big, Andy Fraser was the man. Click that link and see if you like the song then if you do, grab the album, that bass lead break is to die for. Grew up on the studio version and oddly enough it was only a few years back i came across this gem on YT and seeing something you grew up on but never saw is always a treat..and of course bass lead breaks in 1970 were rare(still are) Hope you eventually get a good copy of this and enjoy it. Edit: Another fantastic version>>> Mr Big Edited July 3, 2015 by Luc
Luc Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Geez I'd forgot just how good Paul Kossof and Andy Fraser and Simon Kirke on drums were....wow wee!! Woot!
JukKluk2 Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 The live Mr Big on their best of, The Free Story, has always been the one for me. Fraser's solo is amazing. 1
joz Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 !7 times wow! I think I saw it at the pics about 5 times only. Now if I was only home alone I'd give it a crank.
evil c Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 @@Luc - good to see this album I sent you has provoked discussion on its merits, although restricted to one track! Dancing Days & D'yer Mak'er are other standouts for mine, the remaster ain't half bad to my jaded ears. Outside of your normal listening repertoire, "something old, something borrowed, something blue" as it were! Aaahhh. Lebanese Blondes - they were hot looking weren't they?? 1
Luc Posted July 4, 2015 Author Posted July 4, 2015 @@joz at least 5 or 6 of them was because I was trying to get this bird to partake in the congress of the butterfly and... well let's just say I wasn't the faster mover in the dark amongst the rest of the fumblers trying it on as the movie bashed your ear drums in. Also , um, fell asleep a few times so it actually took a long time to see the movie in its entirety...
