statman Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I've just bought a mini pc , no monitor , keyboard etc. Has 8.1 on it, seems to work pretty good for its $130 cost. Is it possible to run a remote app that will start it? Presently I need a screen to log on, but can it be set up to be started without it having to log in to the remote control device. EG to use teamviewer the two devices have to exchange password, ID. I'd like to just turn it on with on button, and then do everything with mobile device. Is that possible?
AccuTidal Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 (edited) With either Teamviewer or VNC, you can. This is how I remote my Banana Pi, courtesy to a friend's assistance. Edited June 30, 2015 by Chanh
statman Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Yeah, but with teamviewer both devices have to talk to each other to log on, how does the controlled device log on without a screen. I want to lose the monitor screen completely and just use a mobile device for all log ons. Is it possible, or do I just have to leave mini pc on after initial log on?
Jumbuck Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 You can disable the need to use a password when turning on Windows 8 if that helps. 1
aasza Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 You can disable the need to use a password when turning on Windows 8 if that helps. Well yes and no, it's complex.... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Desktop-PC-Questions/Disable-sign-in-password-windows-8-1/td-p/3111945

I control everything via iPad or iPhone. Of course you must manually turn on the mini PC, to kick start.

Chanh, thanks but I think 8.1 is different to your Linux set up which boots directly to JRiver? Anyone know how to get 8.1 to go directly to JRiver on start up, then I could control it with JRemote on mobile?
statman Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Thanks to some 4am googling I figured it out. JRiver can be configured to be open at start. Using personal hotspot on iPhone I can connect directly and control without monitor. JRiver is very cool. Now I will be able to hear how good this $130 server is , also trying fidelizer for first time. Chanh when are you coming down for that holiday?
AccuTidal Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) Chanh when are you coming down for that holiday?Mick, My DAC is at 90% completion, all the credits to @@Doncentric for his professional finishing touch. There will be few more items from Don (Metalworks), Tasso(Woodworks) and myself (Arcylic cover) to attend. We did have a gtg at my shed for the preliminary listening, overall the DAC performed as it should and passed the tests from those hard critic audience. I look forward to have the trip down south when this DAC is in its 100% completion. A few members at the gtg have expressed interests to join. I advised them to inform you direct? Also tried my DAC @@Tasso setup with great result for PCM but DSD performed poorly in contrast to Accuphase DC-37. Edit: photo from Tasso added. Here are some of the photos: Chanh. Now that you got JRiver to start as a service. Don't enable autologin for your machine. Enable remote desktop access (RDP) on that machine instead. Hopefully your 8.1 license has it, I'm not very sure if RDP is available on all Windows ranges. Right click on the "my computer" icon, and then go to "Properties", somewhere in those tabs you should have a way to enable it. Double check and make sure the firewall is allowing RDP traffic for your local network too.. Then from your other machine, start remote desktop (Windows button, and then type "remote desktop", and click on the icon that says "Remote Desktop Connection") .. Enter the IP address of your mini PC, then enter the user account of the mini PC (and enter a password if necessary)... That should do it. With RDP working you can then log in remotely to update/install stuffs when needed from a second computer and control the mini-pic like you're right there. This link hopefully gives you everything you need to set it up. Disable autologin on the mini-pc if you havn't already.. Coz if you're already logged in, remote-desktop will wait about 5-15 seconds longer to force the logged in account to disconnect.

Appreciate that, but I'm using iphone to control , so its iOS/8.1 , so I guess this doesn't apply?
Guest myrantz Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Appreciate that, but I'm using iphone to control , so its iOS/8.1 , so I guess this doesn't apply? Ah, you mean your mini PC is running iOS (Mac)? I got confused it's Windows 8.. RDP is for using a Windows computer remotely (without connecting screen and keyboard to the mini-PC, so you can install software, do software upgrades etc).. If you mean using JRemote to control the songs, then yeah, doesn't apply...
statman Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Yes mini of is running windows 8.1. Remote control is iPhone running iOS . Do I need to enable anything on 8.1?
Guest myrantz Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Yes mini of is running windows 8.1. Remote control is iPhone running iOS . Do I need to enable anything on 8.1? For remote control of JRiver, stick to the Jremote app. Anything else you can use remote desktop to control the machine remotely (just search for remote desktop in the App store), or you can use the remote desktop program on any windows machine. See the link from Microsoft above on how to set it up..
TP1 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Anything but J Remote in that situation will slow things down
statman Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Yeah your right, vnc is very clunky, it's hard to beat the JRiver/JRemote combo. There might be "better" players , but they're probably just different, and as you say, taste/system/synergy plays a greater role. Btw this $130 server ain't bad. 1
