Petit-fou-fou Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I have been offered a 16" Byer TT. The seller has told me that this is a Commonwealth TT, however the makers plate clearly states that the TT was made in Melbourne by Byer industries. Examining my 12D and 12C shows workmanship of far better quality than that of the Byer. I have searched the net and read all I can find on both marques but no mention is made of a link. Is it reasonable to think that the seller is deliberately misrepresenting the Byer as a Commonwealth to raise the price? By the way the TT is in poor condition and expensive considering the work that has to be done. Until I can honestly say that Byer and Commonwealth are not the same company I can't call him on this and knock the price down to what I would consider reasonable.

I would consider it to be misleading . the byer is nothing's like the Commonwealth in quality and made , i have seen people often refer them as Commonwealth and i'm not sure why . but i strongly suspect they try to get the price that the Commonwealth bring , i'm sure some will be confuse and brought the Byer and thinking they got the same quality turntable as the Commonwealth . here is the Real 16" Commonwealth . 1
VanArn Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 The Commonwealth Electronics transcription turntables were manufactured in Hobart and initially distributed by Simon Gray P/L and at a later stage via Philips. The Byer (BSR) turntables were originally manufactured in South Melbourne and then later built at the Rola factory in Richmond , the brand name consequently followed suit.Whilst both brands competed against each other in the professional market, there was never a company connection.
VanArn Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I should add that some caution is needed with some models of the Byer T.T. where a solid rubber ring is fitted to the inside of the platter rim.If this is worn then it may not be an easy task to refurbish without a major change of design. 1
Petit-fou-fou Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Thanks for the info Lovetube and VanArn, I am going to pass on the Byer as I reckon it's a bit of a dog. Spending a large wad on this doesn't really thrill me. Duc, If you decide to sell that 16 Inch Commonwealth would you put me on the list of buyers. Thanks again, Peter.
