For those who may be interested and have Linn DS email membership you'll have got or are about to get an invite to hear their new stereo speaker balancing system. This is said to be able to compensate for rooms that cannot for whatever reason have the speakers placed ideally or that have room correction issues that need addressing. Linns management are bringing into the LInn Cave at Tivoli this new gear on the 23rd to demonstrate its capabilities on some B&W 800 & 803 diamond speakers. Sounds like a fun night IF you can get in early as over half the seats (60 max) are taken.

The list of optimised speakers is impressive............Even my Canton Vento 890.2 DC's are on the list.

For those able to go I would be keen to hear how the B&W 800 and 803 sound after optimisation has been applied.

Another great evening at Tivoli.

The structure of the evening was: gather over drinks and nibbles, Gilad talked and played music, the rest of the shop was then free to be explored.

Gilad gave an overview of Linn's history: his dad buying a top hifi with wedding present money and being disappointed that it sounded worse than his granddad's, thus began the LP12, then they made speakers, then they branched from mechanical engineering to electrical by building amplifiers, then setting up Linn Records, then branching into software in order to make CD players.

Then he talked about them releasing their first streamer in 2007, the Klimax DS, that only played FLAC and WAV, most thought it wouldn't sell as it didn't play mp3, but it revolutionised the market.

He played us two tracks on their entry level standalone streamer (Majik DSM), played through a 2 channel 200W power amp (Linn Akurate 2200) into B&W 803d speakers.  Then the same two tracks on their midrange Akurate DSM streamer, then on their top Klimax DSM.

Room acoustics was the next topic of Gilad's talk: the length of the room, nodes, and certain frequencies sounding louder.  They then switched on some filtering in the KDSM that had been told the dimensions of the room so it could cancel out the unwanted extra bass.  Having not heard this before, I was surprised the music was clearer to hear and follow.

Speaker placement was the final aspect of the talk.  Music was played, the speakers were then moved into better positions, the music sounded clearer.  Then the speakers were moved back to their original more home-friendly position, they sounded worse as before.  More software was engaged in the player which knew where the speakers were placed and where they should be placed, and bingo, all the musical clarity was restored.

At one point Gilad also got out his iPhone and played the beginning to Supertramp's Breakfast From America through the phone's internal speakers, holding his phone up so all in the room could hear.  The opening notes, an octave apart, sounded wrong and flat --- which as Gilad pointed out would give the wrong impression of the song to someone hearing it for the first time.  He then used AirPlay to stream the music digitally to the Klimax streamer over the shops wireless network and this classic track sounded as it should.

After chatting with others for a while, I was given a tour of the whole shop.  I got to hear Pink Floyd's Money on an all Linn Akurate system driving B&W 802diamonds.  Then look at the latest in home cinema technology, a projection screen that is black, with a picture that looks amazing.

Thanks to all involved.

Every evening I've been to at Tivoli has been highly enjoyable: fellow music-and-hifi enthusiasts to talk to over drinks and food, lots of interesting and well setup rooms to explore, plus friendly staff to answer questions.

Shame the mini burgers came out last, there were so many left at the end of the night.  Shame, as they were yummy.

For me, and others, the musical highlight of the night was Hey Laura by Gregory Porter.

Hi Warren,

Glad you enjoyed the night, it was a great pleasure to put on for everyone.

I must disagree with one thing though, we loved the mini burgers coming out last, it meant the staff got to feast on them the next day! :D

Cheers

James
