Thought I would post some pictures and do a quick write up regarding one of my more recent acquisitions.

Picked up a set of L200's for an absolute steal a few months back. Shockingly cheap in pristine condition. Bought from an retired USA Military Serviceman who purchased them new in the 70's. He "upgraded" to a TINY Bose system.......Sad what women make you do.

First port of call I stripped the drivers out and sold the originals on Ebay. Kicking myself now as I regret selling the original LE85's, I should have just used them. I got more for the drivers then I paid for the speakers. Initial listening  left me very surprised at the lack of deep bass from the original LE15B's, very fat mid to upper bass though. When adjusted to flat (laboratory standard :D) on the attenuators these things are terribly bright!

I will list what I have done and what I still want to do:

- Upgraded to 2235H woofers with fresh JBL recones

- Used 2425J Compression drivers with fresh JBL 2421 Diaphragms

- Built a timber plinth for the bottom as the original chipboard stand had swollen and was falling to bits, also threw them on castors.

- Had the cabinets refinished by my local french polisher, they seriously look brand new. Not a mark on them.

- Added a 2405 Slot Tweeter making them a 3-way

- Local SNA member Green Wagon who is the crossover guru built me a pair of Nelson Pass L300 X-overs. Using Wax coils everywhere including the bass circuit.

- Got original Crenalex reproduction grills from the US

To do:

- Waiting for port plugs to change the cabinet tuning to something more suitable for the 2235H woofer

- Considering bumping out the back of the box to fit the longer 2312 horn. This would make them true L300's as they use a longer horn which can be crossed over lower.

- Mount the grills properly as they are just sitting in there at the moment

- Repaint the baffles at some stage

Still burning in the crossovers and wearing in the recones but these are musical beasts as they are right now. Addictive mid-bass and something I can't live without after becoming accustomed to the JBL sound. Surprisingly smooth mid-range and I think these speakers pair much better with tube amplifiers. All round these are fantastic speakers capable of a true full range experience.

I am sort of in between houses at the moment and my roommates have gone away for the weekend so I have setup my system in the lounge room for the day without moving too much around. Not ideal to have them in the corner of the room like this but I gotta go with what I have.

The 4311's I had, same story, guys wife pushed him into bose poo cubes so the 4311's had to go. To me :D

Lack of true deep bass is one of the reasons we went for bigger cabinets. Much bigger cabinets. Was 140ltr, now 224ltr.........

As you know, Dad's 4333/L300 pseudo clone uses the shorter 2308 with the same xover.

Unless you plan on lowering the b/m xover point, I don't think the horn change would achieve anything.

When are you going to clean the dust out of the cabinet corners :sorry:

Yeah yeah, I know, your still shifting, tripping over boxes etc.

Moving is one of the most stressful times in life. Take a deep breath and relax every now and then.

Haha yeah I should have done a bit more dusting before taking pics.

I think your Dads use the same horn as mine? 2307. Pretty sure 2308 is the part number for the Lens.

You are probably right regarding the horns, its sounds fantastic as it is now. I do need to stop reading Lansing Heritage forums as they just keep giving me ideas. That being said, they all do generally agree that the 2312 is smoother in the L300's and that is what was originally used. Initially JBL used the 2307 down to as low as 500hz in some of the older systems. They then changed there mind and started advertising it as 1200hz horn.

I would like to move the baffle out flush but I just hope one day a set of 4343 will come up locally for a good price which would retire these.

A LH member posted an FR graph on the 2425 with 2307. He was using the titanium diaphragm though. Looks bloody good as it is and pretty solid from 800hz +

Internal volume is a tad over 5 cubic feet.

Green Wagon takes the credit for the bog roll port plugs. I noticed he plugged his Dads speakers with them. Have a pair of 100mm Plumbers Test Plugs coming to plug them properly.

i have just simulated the 2235H original parameters with 134L (5cuft less magnet volume), it seems the T/S parameters is little bit too good to be true... has anyone independently measure the driver?

anyhow, this is the simulation of 2235H on 134L and Port ø 4" x Lv 280mm (11")

but it doesnt look like the port length is 280mm isn't it? if you can measure them, i can simulated it more accurately :)

Hi Henry

Thanks heaps for this mate, ports are 100mm x 185mm. I will check the Lansing Heritage site now to check if the 2235's have been independently measured

One reputable LH member reported his freshly FOAMED 2235's came in at FS 19hz but didnt supply the other measurements.

Is it the QTS, X-Max, Vas etc....that you are sceptical on?

the FS, where i have not seen any pro drivers that have Fs 20hz, and that includes JBL's own current drivers now. although i can see that it has a very stiff suspension to make up for the lighter cone and coupled with a very strong motor.. :)

no wonder they are legendary... :)

They are professional JBL drivers...What do you expect! I have set of 12 inch drivers, 2203 that have FS of 16hz. Same magnetic assembly as the 2235H in a 12 inch driver. Seriously strong motor.

The 2235's were pretty much the pinnacle of the vintage 15 inches but the 14 inch LE14H-1's are meant to be better again.

the LE14H seems using similar suspension and cone materials but different magnet structure. i didnt see any photo but looking at the specs only :). why the LE14H considered as better?

I haven't heard one so I can't comment from experience but if you read up on them the LE14 is better at handling higher crossover over points and is all around a more musical woofer.

The 2235 can be used up to 1k but most LH gurus don't like it over 500hz. The LE14H-1/H-3 is fuller in the upper limits of its frequency respone. If its anything like the LE10H it would be an amazingly tight and punchy driver. The LE14 is still a current driver and is now at h-4, same woofer used in the heralded 1400 Array.

Thanks for doing those simulations for me. Came home from work this afternoon and my port plugs were sitting at the front door.

cool, let me know if you like with 1 port fully plugged :)
