Wow, so cheap! Hi-fi Choice gave this turntable a glowing review at 500 quid. A bargain for sure.

Very very  good reviews for this everywhere....but the mojority are from a DJ focus I suppose.

my guess is it performs more or less the same as the PLX1000.

I personally think the Pioneer is a better looking TT.   I especially don't like the rounded dust cover on the AT.

With good reviews and at least $300 cheaper than the PIONEER PLX-1000 , perhaps this is the real replacement for  SL1200

This, the Stanton 150, the American Audio HTD 4.5 are all the same turntable.

The pioneer is also the same turntable, but the height adjust is slightly different and looks more like the technics, and it supposedly has better dampening. The pioneer also lacks an internal phono pre amp, which should give better sound quality as the signal will be going through less circuitry before going to your external phono stage. Easy mod though to remove the phono stage.

Agreed the pioneer does look better. For DJing I would get these, for HiFi the pioneer, purely cos of looks!

The  phono pre-amplifier stage on the Audio Technica LP1240 is "Selectable", so you would not need to remove it .

It also has USB out, and yes I understand it is selectable, but the signal still passes through the circuitry i.e. you aren't getting a signal straight from the tonearm to the RCA. Ideally there should be no electronics in the signal path between needle and phono stage. Have a look at the AT LP120, and you'll see that removing the phono stage from inside results in a huge increase in sound quality.

Not sure how it stacks up but I would bet my left ball that the Pioneer will sound quite a bit better for stereo listening, considering the changes the Pioneer has over the stk Super OEM.

On the long PLX-1000 on Hoffman site, one guy had a LP1240 and returned it - he loves the PLX-1000, see link.       You just need to ignore all the naysayers slagging off the Pioneer without actually ever hearing it :)

I think the question really is.... will it sound better than an entry level Project..

My bet is that it would sound better than an entry Project. (not to hard to do that though)

And so, at that price a great entry turntable that could be very good when fitted with a nice cartridge.

These turntables are great. My brother has one,and its sounds great.Very well made and VERY heavy, looks just like my 1200MkII but with more features. He is quite happy with the stylus & preamp too,he doesn't like the 400MLa(or anything to hifi really ,he's more of a lo-fi type of guy) i have because he does like the HF's on it and because he's play a lot of older blues LP's, & the rice bubbles sound huge through his rig.

I have seen them for sale new at the DJ store for $380ish in the last year,so they are actually going up!

That same chap also says he thinks the Pioneer every bit as good as a VPI Scout 1.1.

I used to own that same Scout model and this week I'll *finally* be unboxing and setting up the Pioneer.

cool John

Let us know how you like the table. The headshell is the only thing I have changed to the stk table - including the IC.

What cart are you using?

BTW, you should add this to the Pioneer PLX thread as no one is going to casually read this one  ;)

The American Audio HTD 4.5 does not have an internal preamp. It otherwise seems identical to the AT and Stanton. There are also some other less common versions, Citronic etc.

Correct - I actually have a HTD 4.5 for sale in the classifieds.
