Mr Mobius Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Well I joined I think it was last Friday to get advice and one day buy some gear. However last week I purchased some second hand Lamm M1.2Ref mono blocks privately in NZ - prior to joining SN. I then came across SN and joined (and got some nice replies to my intro message). And now... ... thanks to SN I have got my ultimate (Ok, maybe one or two components missing but verrrrry close) setup as I came across a Concert Fidelity CF-080LLX2 line preamp and a Meitner MA-1 Dac on SN and have purchased both. I shudder with anticipation as to how good (OK, I hope) this is all going to sound together. I also have an Airtight ATM 2 as a 'back up' and my speakers (currently) are Harbeth Super HL5s, Monitor Audio PL300s and B&W PM1s. I'm going to wait and see what sounds best with the new gear when I get it all together. I also have plenty of top valves here or coming (including EAT KT88s Diamonds for the Airtight and macthed Mullards, Telefunken and Amperex phono grade for the Concert Fidelity and Lamms.) All in all I have paid around 25% of new for kit ranging between 2 and 5 years old and all still top of the line (or near top according to reviews etc) so very happy price wise. I do however feel bad when other people sell such kit for these types of prices - though some have 'moved up' though into what I am unsure. Any thoughts as to how this all going to sound and/or what else I am missing or should do to get the best out of this (I think/hope) very good setup? Though I think I had better quit SN before I buy any more gear. Have a great day wherever you are reading this - and all ideas appreciated. Cheers Stu 1
Benje Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Hi Stu sounds like you aren't married...... If you are, you have a 'keeper'. Happy buying, happier listening.
Mr Mobius Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 Nope - married 23 years but forgot to have kids so only have dogs. 4
Benje Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Ahh, I can relate to this. Dare I say we have had sheepdogs. Bearded collies. In stereo language, dogs are known as 'woofers'. 1
Viognier Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Awesome buying @Mr Mobius Sounds like you are in for lots of fun when all the kit arrives. You do seem to be missing something to spin some vinyl on. There is an excellent SME in the classified at the moment.
Mr Mobius Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 I forgot to say we lost one of our 'woofers' (sic dogs) thirteen weeks ago at the age of 15.5 years but still have the mad 18 year old around. Maybe I am trying to compensate for my dear and recently departed woofer. Alas re records, we use (that being the operative word) to have a lot of great ones but stupidly thought that that was the past and hence gave them all away quite some time ago. I am totally unclear as to what way to go source wise. I use Tidal a lot and Spotify a little and have several thousand CDs but only an Oppo 105 around at the moment to play them on. I also have a large itunes library but I know that I really need to work on better source material and a source device as I currently use an iPad (for Tidal) plugged into the Perreaux DAC (see below) via USB. I also have a Perreaux E250i 40th (Perreaux's) birthday moded with an onboard DAC that I might keep hooked into the system for TV purposes (using the Meitner DAC and Concert Fidelity pre into the power amp part of the Perreaux bypassing its pre and DAC - which I am pretty sure is possible) so as to only use the Lamms and Airtigh for music and TV. However I don't want to have to disconnect a tube amp (from when I listen to music) and connect the Perreaux to the speakers every time I change over. And I am pretty sure that a switching box of some type would degrade the signal path between the power amps and the speakers - is that correct? I have also been told that having two different amps connected to a single speaker at the same time (even if only one power amp is on) is also a bad idea. To be quite honest I feel very excited (re the new gear coming) but a tad out of my depth so an trying to learn fast. The Perreaux might simply have to go if I can't figure out a solution but I hate to sell gear I like. Something has to give though and I could do with the funds - and clearning some space once the new stuff arrives.
Super Mustud Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Stay long enough and you can start selling the gear there that you bought when you first joined! Evolution. Like monkey evolves to man. Sort of... 1
