Klein DAC owners thread

I've just experimented with the Digital Optical port of the Klein DAC. I didn't think it would make a difference switching between inputs but there seems to be an actual difference between USB and Optical in terms of how it sounds. Currently can't say if I prefer one over the other, though they do sound different.

Hi everyone,

Well finally today a fresh batch of boards has arrived so I can start production again. It will take me four or five days to catch up on back orders & then the lead time of new orders will only be a few days.

Cheers

Clay

I have a very bass sensitive room that is usually well behaved now with the me 1400. As far as early, and possibly less valid dac impressions, upright bass reproduction not amazing yet but upper mid vocal and guitar detail lots of fun already. I think a comparison at Frank's treated room will probably mean the comparison will make more sense to others. I did notice last night that swapping from coax to usb it softened highs a tad. The ECM jazz style up front sizzle ride cymbals moved further away in location. No biggie, just an initial observation going from coax to usb. So far I'm keeping both filter switches up.

I have heard the earlier version of the Klein compared to the Directstream, posted somewhere about it. To me the Directstream is in a class of its own. Very good.

Where the Klein comes in is that new it is A$750 whilst the Directstream is about A$8,000.

I had read/heard that Clay was using a DirectStream as one of his references which is why I thought it would also be a very good unit. DSDac with the new Yale FPGA OS has taken another upward step in SQ

DirectStream Dac + PerfectWave Transport

I have heard that comparison a lot, as has Clay.  I think the DS is better, but its closer than you might expect.  Some people actually prefer the Klein.

IMHO the big advantage of the DS is with each software upgrade it gets better and better.  You are basically buying a DAC that is very unlikely to have obsolescence issues.

Interestingly when both of us first heard the DS we were unimpressed.  I thought Clays Konverter was easily better.  But the DS simply got better and better with each upgrade until now I rate it better than the Konverter or Klein.  Note the price difference though.

Thanks

Bill
