Tantalising Turntables

more turntableporn. Jasper this is for you - Lenco heaven

Nice finish. A bit of a brute.

It looks like the guy who made his name making nice plinth/restoration of lower end vintage Thorens has caught on to the Lenco hype.

Which makes it disconcerting! If you can't actually hear an arm in a system bearing (at least) some passing resemblance to yours, how can you judge whether $8K or $10K will give you more listening pleasure than, say, $4K or $5K?

In my case, I bought my G2.2 6/7 years ago purely on the reviews I had read and the fact that it gave amazing micro-meter adjustment of VTA (on the fly), VTF and azimuth. It cost me A$6K then - which was a lot - but ...??? ;)

Regards,

Andy

That's the thing, you often don't know and it's a gamble. In your case, it has worked out over time even though it was quite a left field choice for a Linn Sondek, still not as unconventional as your previous Dynavertor 505 though.:)

Whether the hype and high price is justifiable for a lot of these new tonearms, only time will tell. I have personally found some excellent well made Japanese tonearm of the 80s can give some of the modern arms a run for their money for a fraction of the cause. But many have now caught on to this and the price of the sought after used arms have appreciated quite a bit too over the last few years.

I just looked at every page of this thread...such a great forum with wonderful posts. I enjoyed all the pictures of so many different turntables....I wish I could win the lottery and buy about 10 of the tables I saw! Here is my turntable. I have a second arm (Clearaudio Universal) I plan on adding as well. Running it with Graham Phantom B44 and Benz Micro LP-S (a great cartridge!). Sorry the picture shows up small, but if you click on it the thumbnail should open up.

Thanks -- one of the tables I covet is the one you have -- the Exclusive P3a. Beautiful in every way. In the same vein, I've reached out to Atma-Sphere and they are kind enough to be selling me a Atma-Sphere 208 (modded Empire 208). When I was a teenager, I had a Empire 698, a modified Hafler amp, NAD preamp, all driving a pair of Maggies -- been chasing that sound ever since.

What a beauty. This has KM written all over it.

One question for you dpod4. Why didn't you go for the acrylic platter?

Cheers,

KM

Love that Innovation. As you can see, I'm a Clearaudio owner as well.

Like His Highness, I was wondering about your platter choice. I know they are rolling out those black platters (can't remember what they're made of) across some more of their range - I've seen it on my table at the latest CES I think.

Beautiful Bunny :thumb:

These Clearaudio Turntables are very neat and I will join the club as well.......one day soon hopefully.

The black platter is made of Polyoxymethylene whatever that means and has a higher density than the acrylic if I remember correctly? No idea what impact that matierial has on sound or performance.

I think under the DuPont name it is sold as Delrin .

Congrats, it's a nice looking table too! Bet it sounds a treat :-)

You're right, Mal.

Delrin, aka P.O.M..........

My ex brother inlaw and I replaced all of the rubber bushes in a car with Delrin ,the car handled like a goat cart but you didn't want to hit bumps in the road .

Cheers

Interesting, when I placed my order for the Innovation table, I told my dealer I liked the looks of the chrome and wood with clear platter. He immediately told me that I wanted the black Delrin platter -- more density/better material than clear platter and an improvement (in resonance control etc). So even though the clear is better looking (IMHO), I opted for the black Delrin platter since it is supposed to be sonically better. I didn't listen to both side by side so hard to say whether it is better. I also opted for the outer peripheral ring and locator guide which is on its way to me. One thing I immediately noticed about the Clearaudio (compared to my Basis turntable), was the speed/pitch control -- my ears are sensitive to speed stability especially on vocals. This table is rock solid on speed stability, like an idler or direct direct. Plus it is high torque motor and high mass platter I believe is what is the cause for the amazing dynamics/punch that comes thru. The grip and extension of treble and bass surprised me when I first listened to it. It also delivered on what I was wanting more of -- inner detail and no veil. It may be the combination with the Tara Labs Zero GX cable and Benz LP-S cartridge, but there is a lot of detail and information coming thru relative to other turntables I've heard.

I haven't received the Atma-Sphere 208 yet but will report back on that when I receive it. I just bought a NOS Empire 4000 D III gold MM cartridge on e-bay to use with it, but am open to others' recommendation on best cartridge to use on a 208 table (with Triplanar VII arm).

Beautiful vinyl rig; love the contrast of clear platter between black plinth and vinyl -- the reviews I read about your table are what actually made me decide I wanted to buy a Clearaudio. The Performance SE plus Satisfy tonearm are supposed to be giant killers.

Cheers for the compliments lads.

I had heard the same thing about the P.O.M platters qualities. But like you dpod4 I prefer the clear platter visually, especially with the contrast between the deck and the vinyl colour. The one thing I have found with my table is it runs just a tad fast at 33 1/3. I have moved the belt to the slightly slower ring on the drive unit, but according to my speed strobe it's just that wee bit too fast. I wish there was another way to adjust the speed, like a screw or something similar, like my Linn Axis has. However the good thing is the shift is so minor I don't notice it.

Bunyip, my Innovation has three screws on the front (little round, somewhat unsightly) holes just underneath the platter to adjust the speed for 33 1/3, 45, and 78rpm. On the advice of some turntable and audiophile experts here in the US, I was told to set my speed a wee bit fast...that analogue sounds better when the speed is running just a hair fast. So that's how I'm running mine.

Hi dp

Are the thickness of the platters different ,clear vs black because if they are different so should the thickness of the platters .I wonder if the black p[latter has a higher carbon content .

Cheers

Ahhh, interesting. I don't have that level of adjustment unfortunately. However it seems I am running at Audiophile Recommended Speed, so that's good! :)
