Tantalising Turntables

Recommended Posts

As a follow up to the Titillating Tonearms series, and due to overwhelming demand (Keith_W made a veiled reference in another post), I will now post my follow up - Tanatlising Turntables. Covering the many ways of spinning a 2 cent blob of black vinyl, the turntables or record players, as they were commonly called in Australia will not necessarily be restricted to top end models or current models.

Please feel free to add your favourites to the post with the name, whether it is currently available and any notable comments.

I will start with my particular favourite.

DPS_Turntable_image.jpg

dps 3 (Price around $10,000)

The deceptively simple and elegantly styled dps 3 with Schroeder Model 2 tonearm and outboard (not shown) 3 phase power supply and a plinth made from layered Plexiglas, cork, birch plywood and heavy damping foil on a damped granite base. Make sure you have an alternative as the dps 3 (like all Schroeder tonearms) has a waiting list of around 18 months.

cheers

Some guy from Germany loved his Tammy GT-750 but did not care for the cheap plinth. Have a look at is new plinth - beautiful.

I was having a look at Analog Planet and watched the video of Fremer and Chris Thornton from Artisan Fidelity. This Garrard 301 looked not bad on the clip so I had a look elsewhere to find more detail

Upgraded from SME 20/12 V12 to the 30/12 V12 early this year.

Kondo Ginga A recent addition to the Audio Note repertoire, I can't find a price but it will not be cheap...:P

The red one in the pic is just the standard version...;)

More down to earth, my current fave and medium-term goal:

Two weekends back, this beauty, with SME arm and Zyx cartridge, was responsible for some of the most heart-meltingly beautiful sounds I've heard...in my limited experience, admittedly.

Bugger the gold-plating, this one would make me very happy indeed.

DS,

Some more exciting photos for you:

sx-8000.jpg

Micro Seiki SX 8000 II

One of the best turntables ever built, the SX 8000 has been out of production for over 20 years, but stil commands prices of over $5000 on the rare occasion that they turn up on the secondhand market. This is one very solid table at over 90kg.

microseiki_2.jpg

Micro Seiki SZ 1T

The rarest and best of the Micro Seiki turntables. Micro Seiki's tour de force was built in very small numbers in 1983-84. They rarely appear for sale, but the last one sold on eBay for around US$20,000. Keep saving DS.....

Kuzma Stabi Reference (price around $9,000)

Using a sandwich plinth of aluminium and acrylic to dampen out unwanted resonances, this type of construction was revolutionary in 1990 when the Reference was first intoduced.

Kuzma Stabi XL (price around $20,000)

2006-10-Kuzma-stabi-S.jpg

Kuzma Stabi S (Price around $1800)

A very well engineered (like all Kuzmii ) turntable and very hard to beat for the price.
