Well I have currently finished my first in home demo of the devialet 240. Gotta say first impressions are pretty positive. I must admit it has exceeded my expectations. Detailed, punchy, some might say clinical but I think it's more to do with it being very true to source! Although it is a little different in its use of a class D topology it certainly shows it can be done really well! Not to mention all in one solution!will post some more thoughts soon when I get a chance to config the phono stage (which I heard is a cracker!) If post-141338-141369080129.jpg

you haven't had a listen do yourself a favour and take a peek if only for curiosity:)

In your photo it appears that the protective plastic film that the unit ships with is still in place.

The Devialet can get very hot and I have heard reports of the chrome becoming discoloured when the Devialet is used with that film left on.

Perhaps you should discuss this with the dealer that provided the unit for home demo.

I'd hate to see such a gorgeous piece of industrial art become discoloured.

I assume you mean the 250? Hasn't the 240 become a 250 now?

Yeh it's a 240 but has latest 7.1 firmware so think it is 250

I'll raise thanks mate

You can tell by the porthole display when in standby or when switched on.

It will display either "Devialet 250" or if has not yet been upgraded it will display "Devialet 240".

The latest firmware is 7.1.1. To check what you have installed give a long press on the "Tone" button on the remote which gives you access to the "Info pages". There are a dozen or so of these pages and you can scroll through them.

7.1.1 gives the added functionality of turning the USB input into either an input or an output. Handy for making digital files from vinyl.

Interesting to know re: digital out, I've been trying to work out how I can integrate a deqx isn't the fold! Any ideas?

Hyper,

I suggest that you contact support at Devialet.

Our respective time zones hinder speedy replies but they are very responsive to any queries except in August.

Just to say it again. The Devialet is NOT a class D amp. It's a hybrid Class A amp using switching technology to generate current. The signal going to your speakers is an analog signal generated by a conventional class A amp. The Devialet is a "hybrid" amp in that it uses switching technology to generate current to help drive the loudspeaker load.

so when the loudspeaker...

demands a current that exceeds the power capability of the Class A stage, a class D digital switching amplifier is seamlessly engaged to supply additional current—and current only, mind you—to help maintain the voltage across the load called for by the music.

also:

To provide the current to drive the loudspeaker, a four-phase, multilevel class D amplifier—four switching stages, staggered in time—is added in parallel to the class-A amplifier. Conventional class-D amplifiers suffer from high levels of ultrasonic switching noise riding on their outputs, which mandate use of a hefty low-pass filter between the output stage and the speaker terminals. In the D-Premier, there is no LC filter on the class-D amplifier’s output; instead, the analog amplifier provides a very wide-bandwidth correction signal that cancels the ultrasonic switching noise that would otherwise be present.

from davidmichaelaudio.com

Called ADH®, for Analog Digital Hybrid, this patented topology connects a small, high-voltage, but low-power class-A amplifier directly to the speaker, with then a parallel class-D stage providing the necessary current. This is reminiscent of the innovative "current-dumping" circuit developed by Quad in the mid-1970s, though the Quad circuit used a class-AB current amplifier. However, the AHD circuit differs significantly in detail from Quad's, and is considerably more complex. Extraordinarily, there only two resistors and two capacitors in the analog signal path!...To provide the current to drive the loudspeaker, a four-phase, multilevel digital amplifier—four switching stages, staggered in time—is added in parallel to the class-A amplifier. It is slaved to the class-A amp much as in a car's power steering, where the driver turns the steering wheel to indicate how much he wants the wheels to turn, and a servo-controlled hydraulic system actually turns the wheel.

Note the output in the switching circuit is not directly in the signal path to your speakers, unlike with a Class D amp. The Class A amp is directly in the signal path to the speakers. In fact, if you take the switching module out of the Devialet entirely, it can still drive the speakers (very low wattage signal).

It would not surprise me if the dealer had not done the upgrade. All reports from owners of upgraded machines indicates its worthwhile doing.

How do you find the sound at moderate volumes. Every time i hear one its blasting and thats when they are supposed to sound their best, well more so than other amps.

Given the recent changes in DAC technology I also wonder if Devialet are looking at their DACs. Its a single box but its also supposed to be a modular design just like a PC. When i borrowed a Chord Hugo recently it struck me that if i had purchased a Devialet i would not have the ability to upgrade.

As for digital vinyl, well who knows the provenance of vinyl music these days, but it would seem smarter to rip your records while new and just play the files. That being said not all digital sources are equal.

This is especially true if you have speakers that are on the "SAM" list

Interestingly enough Brissy I actually found 12-1 sweet spot bare in mind that my room is quiet large and speakers aren't easy to drive if it was 400 watt probably would have sat at 11.... Actually found imaging and staging dropped the more I push it
