240v to 110v step-down transformers?

I don’t know where to post this, so I'll whack it here.

 

I am getting annoyed with my current router setup (I have 1 handheld plunge that I need to swap out of the table). I've looked at local options and I don’t like them. I want a proper lift (an Incra to be precise) and it can only use fixed base router motors from the US.

 

What are peoples experience with step-down transformers? Do they work? Are they reliable? Safe?

 

The router I am looking at is a Porter Cable. Its 15 amps, 120 VAC, 60hz. 3-1/4 HP
