unclemack Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Customer came into the shop yesterday teling me that his 30yr old Onkyo amp had stopped working and needed a replacement. He had written down some requirements which included 100 watts pc and the ability to connect his TV/DVD etc to the amp. I showed him one of our AV receivers thinking that this might be appropriate and while we spoke I quizzed him about his speakers. he wasn't sure which Tannoys they were..but they were Tannoys. I gleaned that they were probably 15" and a single driver in quite a big cabinet. It was at this point that I suggested we back away from the AV receivers!! he emailed me later as requested, with the model and they turned out to be the Super Red monitors.... Thank God he came to me rather than one of our lesser informed salespeople... he would have ended up with a crappy amp for these beauties and just done them an injustice. I suggested he get in touch with James or Geoff at Tivoli to find a suitable amp for these speakers. I also strongly urged him to get in touch with Earle to discuss something in a nice Tube amp. he was really pleased with the advice and service I gave him and went on his way. In his email he mentioned that Tannoy recommended power of 150-200 watts.... So, maybe I was a little off with my Tube amp suggestion. I thought these tannoys were very efficient and Tube Friendly. Does anyone know much about these units? I'd like some guidance so that I can pass it on to Glenn.. Cheers M
ThirdDrawerDown Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Nice question to ask. For context your customer might like to start playing here: http://www.44bx.com/tannoy/ At the risk of causing some conflicted customer loyalties, and acknowledging that Earle is a SNA Sponsor, it probably is worth pointing out that the Melbourne Tannoy dealer Audiophile have some experience at matching tube amps to Tannoys. (That's where I learned that the packaging that encloses a Westminster is smaller than the size of a Tardis. But not by much).

Of course...I was trying to think of who was dealing with, or had experience with tannoy...completely forgot Nick @ Audiophile. Cheers mate. M 1
A9X Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I've had most of the Gold and HPD series and there's nothing about them that makes them 'tube friendly' except they're a bit more efficient than most. Red 15's in good condition are nice drivers I'd expect (only had the 12's myself), and whilst they are now very rare and valuable are far from the most resolving speakers out there.
VanArn Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Just a reminder to avoid confusion. The Monitor Red 15'' LSU/HF/15-L dates back to 1958 and was superceded by the Gold monitor around 1968. The K3808 15'' is from around 1982 and this is the unit used in the Super Red Monitor system. 1
unclemack Posted August 18, 2014 Author Posted August 18, 2014 Yes. It's the 3808 that we are referring to. Thanks VA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
