So I have a Sony BDP5000ES Bluray player I bought back in 2009.

It is a tank, has never missed a beat and to this day still performs brilliantly.

Sitting along side it I have an el cheapo Sony BDPS580 which I picked up while in the US to play both 3D and Zone A discs.

My colleague is trying to convince me on flogging my 5000ES off and buying an Oppo with a mod kit for multi region. However, when I think about it, I almost cringe.

I've upgraded plenty of things over the years, AVRs, tvs, speakers, but for some reason when I think about pulling out that player, it pulls on my heart strings.

Would I really gain all that much? Particularly if it's purely used for bluray/DVD? (Hi-Fi is seperate).

As with hi fi, it is a case of lab measurements vs noticeable improvements vs $$$ vs the 'need to upgrade'.

At seating distance, there is not really any difference between a PS3 and an Oppo 83 in my home on a 46 inch LCD.

A single box solution with the Oppo, and the connectivity capabilities are other things to take into account.

I don't know why you even ask the question when you are this happy.

how are you hooked up ?

I owned the 5000es for some years myself from new. the likes of this player are simply not on the market. its a tank ! some other players have owned are the denon 4010 and the oppo95. the sony was faultless. very smooth in operation. not one issue ever ! analog wise you wont get any better wiht a basic oppo, youd need to go to a 95 or 105 to better.

if hooked over hdmi ? nothing to be gained. in some aspect I think the super bit mapping the sony used had something special to the picture.

I wouldnt drop the sony, you'll loose money on it and not sure anything if any to be gained in the change over.

Yeah, I think that is how I'm feeling about it too. On the off chance I get a disc that will only play on a US player, I have the other unit there.

Thanks for your input guys!

Nothing wrong with the Sony s580 for bluray duties, whether you get better SQ with say the OPPO105 in comparison to the Sony 5000 I wouldn't know but if you are in Melb Western suburbs I can always bring it around. However I do believe the OPPO 105 is better in connectivity.

yeah keep in mind the sony 5000es is also by default region free on dvd, something with oppo's and such you'd have to pay for a region free kit to have.

The Oppo probably isn't as well built as the ES but I have been pretty impressed with how well built the 10x is over the 9x and 8x series from Oppo.

The Oppo would very likely improve on the following - video upscaling from SD/DVD and 720p material.

You get 4k upscaling if you are using or buying a 4K TV. And 3D playback if you have a 3D TV or buying one.

There are 2 HDMI inputs that allow you to use the Oppo's upscaling engine with set top boxes etc.

There are 2 HDMI outputs which allow the use of say a HDMI1.3 or earlier AVR for HD audio playback while using a 3D or 4K TV

It gives the flexibility to play DVDAs and media files including music from a USB HDD

And it can also function as a USB DAC if you have a computer nearby.

The free app allows you to control the playback of music files over an iPad (and I believe Android tablets) without needing a display.

Correct I use my Samsung S4 and a 10.1 tablet to control mine. The 105 is a half decent media streamer compared to the earlier models.
