dimo Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Greetings and salutations, Looking for a bit of advice. About a year ago I took a bit of a plunge into the world of records. At the time I had limited space, and so after much consultation I decided to purchase the small form Rega Brio R to connect my table to my Usher S520s. A year on I have moved rooms and now have a bit more space. Over the weekend I purchased a gorgeous rack which was originally a circa 1906 shoe rack (shown below). While I really enjoy the Rega, the new rack completely swallows the tiny amp, and while I understand that aesthetics should (probably) not take precedence over quality I am looking for a compromise. Specifically trying to see if there is a larger vintage integrated amp with a MM phono that would perform as well as the Rega, preferably for $600 or less (the price I could sell the Rega for). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you all in advance -Dmitri 1
Luc Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 A Sansui Au-5900 would do the job if your into vintage if you could find one for sale, or it's bigger brothers the 6900 or 7900(no I'm not selling mine) and there is a raft of good Yamaha's that could do the job but I'm a bit biased so I like black faced Sansui's. The 417 would do nicely too. There a couple of both in the FS section I think or were. 1
kelossus Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I have a Sansui 4900 Integrated for $300. It has been recapped, in absolute fantastic condition. Phono stage works well.
pete_mac Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Nice rack!! Some black-faced Sansui goodness would look superb on it 1
Luc Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 (edited) @dimo starting to feel the love here yet? There's an AU-4900 in this pile of black, if your wondering what they look like. Edited August 14, 2014 by Luc
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 You could probably pick up a nice Marantz PM80 (preferably a mkII) for that kind of cash. Nice amp. Reliable and excellent sound.
dimo Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 Thanking you all kindly for the advice, will seek out a Sansui locally to audition absolutely love how they look. 1
