Greetings all, just checking if any esteemed SNAers have a tasty pair of speakers lying around, looking unloved and under appreciated.

I'm just setting up my first system, which will be modest, and upgraded when possible. I'll be playing mostly vinyl and radio. So a good, musical allrounder is what I'm after.

Obviously $600 isn't going to get me anything high end, but a boy has to start somewhere, right?

Anyone need to raise a bit of cash towards their next project? Cheers!

I'm rubbish at woodwork, unfortunately. I shudder to think what I would turn out if let loose with some tools. Probably put myself in hospital on the way, too :)

Got a mate who is very good with that sort of thing. A bit of speaker box construction could be a joint (pun not intended) project for the future.

Hey Tony, cheers for the offer. Might pm you in the coming days re. having a listen.

Happened to stop into Trevor Lees for the first time the other day. Was an 'interesting' experience. Trevor needs a sitcom, methinks!

Saw him a few times many many years ago...he is certainly an active guy, and quite hyper

Yes, that's it..........Hyperactive would be an apt description.

Made me laugh and shake at the same time.... :nana :ban:

Listen at more venues

work out the sound signature you like

come back here with 2 lists of speakers you liked and disliked

From that we can maybe work out other brands in the like camp available here

Don't let the detractors put you off. Many Melbourne members will have an old pair of fine speakers out the back looking for a good home. Buying second hand you can get some descent gear that's well run in and will hold its value when its time to sell.

It might help if you  let us know what amp you have or want to get ie SS/tube/power-output are all good to know for speaker  matching.

Thanks for the advice and offers all. I'm going to meet up with an SNA regular next week sometime, and he has several pairs for me to listen to. Hopefully after that I'll have a better idea

Someone here has a pair of Dynaudio X12's. whilst this is slightly over my budget, they sound pretty tasty (from reviews, I haven't actually heard them). Have any of you guys had them/heard them? What about Kef Concertos?

Amp-wise, I've just got a secondhand Denon, nothing special. I'm thinking that, off in the future, I might get myself a tube type jobby (a friend has a Weston Time Machine, very nice), but that's a way off yet.

Like you guys say, I need to listen to as many pairs as possible. I'm gonna pound the pavement and annoy some sales assistants over the coming days 😃

Thanks again, and happy listening y'all

X12s are a nice speaker especially for their size! Not sure if you've seen them in the flesh but they are tiny!

Still dyns probably need something a bit more generous in the amplification so maybe a bit of a waste until such time that you can afford something with a bit of drive..

There is a noticeable step up in the dynaudio range as one would expect, but I think more so than other makes..

The focus is a great speaker but needs serious grunt to get your dollars worth from them. I found that class D is great with the dyns, gives them great depth and generally can be had allot cheaper than your class a/b that is up to the task.

Look at w4s great VFM IMO..

If going down the dyn track stay away from SET tube amps unless willing to ospend huge $$.. You'd be far better off with SS to get the best out of them. Once again only my opinion.

Cheers
