bassman Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Been looking at building a MC phono stage for awhile decided on the RJM phonoclone . Parts arrived last week started putting it together, looks like a nice kit but will prob get a better cap for the output coupling (M-cap or something similar) , and prob load at 100 ohms . Will power it with a toroidal transformer and power supply design that's on his web site . Can't wait to hear how it sounds will be used with a Denon DL301 mk2 1
bassman Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Been very slack here is a up date on project . Power supply parts should arrive soon to finish the build . 1
bassman Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Phono clone finished . Power supply next just waiting on case to put together . 2
bassman Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 So how does it sound ? WOW it's awsome huge soundstage, deep bass, smooth extended top end, dead quiet, better then any inbuilt phono stage I own . I wonder how it compares with other high end or diy stages ? Peter 2

Guest Muon Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Nice build Are they KZ caps? Only reason is i found them a bit dry sounding in my BHL kit. But It's all subjective and many people like the KZ's. The GTG should be great fun, nothing like getting a feel for where ya' baby stands

The Denon 301 has 33Ω coil imped & would likely go best at >270Ω loadings. I'd start with 270 - 390Ω. Cheers, Owen Dark Lantern blog - http://darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/ 1

Cheers, Owen Dark Lantern blog - http://darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/ Hi Owen I'm using 47.5 ohm that's what RJM speced for the DL301MK2 but I am keen to try a higher value and see what difference I get, gain is set at 75 db 1k resistor, it sounds bloody awsome so far .
Owen Y Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Hi bassman - if you mean 1k phono input loading for the cartridge, then that's not a bad place to start. Try lower Ω if you wish to experiment. It's usual to load a device with several times its source impedance for low distortion. If the specified 33Ω coil imped for the DL301 is correct, then 3x would be absolute minimum & 8-12x usually the recommended sweet spot. bassman Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 No it's loading is at 47.5 ohms the 1k is for gain, it's what Richard from RJM speced for the demon cart it seems low so I will try a higher value in there .
